Haverford

No football, no frats, student-run "honor code." Not simply liberal, but years ago a very conspicuous pothead/tie-dye culture that you could spot in ten minutes. Know of several very nasty stories about treatment of students who don't conform to the hippie culture.

If this is true, it's more like decades ago, not "several" years ago.

I've never heard anything like this about Haverford. It's a great school. Perhaps you didn't get in, PP?

Haha. This thread is probably the most mention that teeny tiny haverford has ever received. The size and the male/female ratio are reasons alone to select another school.

Quirky to the Extreme

wth? Haverford students aren't any more quirky than other college students. I've known straight laced STA students to go there, then go on to be investment bankers. It's a SLAC, like Amherst, Kenyon, Oberlin, Swarthmore, etc.

If Haverford were a Nescac, what school is most like it?

You seem to like the words teeny tiny. Freudian, I suspect?

My guess is the last you heard from Haverford was in a rejection letter.

Why are people on this board so judgemental? Haverford is a great school for those looking for a LAC. Others may prefer a Big 10 school. My kid goes to Wesleyan, my friend's kid goes to UMD, and they're both happy. I don't understand the one-upmanship.

Sure you do,

I graduated Haverford about 20 years ago -- it was liberal politically, as you might expect, but not hippies, not a conspicuous drug scene -- pretty conservative socially. Not a lot of characters -- but a lot of future lawyers, banker types, journalists. Not an over abundance of people planning to save the world (despite Quakerism/social justice emphasis) As a pp said, men and women's sports were taken seriously (Division 3, but in such a small school a lot more people play. And facilities have improved greatly in recent years.)

At the time, we were seen as a step below Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, and around the same level as Bowdoin, Claremont, and above Colby,Bates. Once you get past the first three tho, it gets pretty subjective.

Also, will repeat: It is a very small school, felt smaller than high school in many ways.

2258 here: wanted to add that the f-m ratio is more like 3 to 1, not 4 to 1. HC has 600 men and 600 women or thereabouts; while BMC has 1200 women. So, 1800 to 600. Still very uneven, tho as you might suspect, many of the BMC women want nothing to do with Haverford and ignore that scene altogether. BMC also much more international student makeup

I LOVE THIS! DH went to San Jose State. One of the smartest and most highly trained engineers I've even known (granted, I'm clearly biased)
Go SJSU Spartans!

You're not biased and Microsoft isn't stupid. It is what it is.

How strong is the alumni network?

Folks, just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean that it is unknown by those who matter.

Half the time we've only heard of certain schools because there's a football team or a basketball team. How on earth could that matter?

Haverford has an excellent reputation for turning out well-qualified graduates who can go on to do many things. A thesis is required for graduation.

The engineering program is joint with Penn.

No football would be a plus for my kid. We toured it and loved it. There's also cricket, which is surprisingly large in the Philadelphia area.

It is an excellent school.
