F. YOU. My kid had two coats stolen already this year. No sticky fingers is entitle to my shit.

And F the parents who allow their kids to keep stolen items.

Why are all of you being so hateful towards me? I wasn't condoning theft, merely stating a reason why it may have happened. And to the first responder, maybe your child lost his/her coats and is terrified to tell you because of your anger issues.

When my son was in kindergarten, his brand new lands end jacket went missing in November. It did not surface into the lost and found until April. Basically the kid who took the jacket used it the entire winter. I was amazed that the parents allowed that whoever it was. I had funds to buy a replacement coat so w my boys did not freeze, but some kid wore his first coat the entire winter season.

Ooh. That's really awful. Did the coat looked used or it was my be a coat similar that ended up in the lost and found? Or maybe the kid brOught the coat home and it sat in a closet until the end of the year.

I had someone swap my north face coat for another at a restaurant. It was exactly the same colour and same size too. But it stank And smelled all sweaty and the zipper was damaged and there were some fraying at the sleeves. I am pretty sure it was deliberate because mine had lots Of perfume and it was only two weeks old. Definitely not something someone wouldn't realize.

I had to wear that coat home because it was freezing but it was in the bin the minute I got home..... You can be sure I never hung my Coat on a rack ever again and will always bring it to my seat!

So maybe if you found the coat in the lost and found, that could be what happened. The parents or the kid did a bait and switch. And left you with a stinky old coat....

In the meantime the person who took your coat in error recognized their mistake and took returned it to the restaurant coat clost. They looked to see if their coat was still there and it was gone. They came back a week later, still gone...

I guess they can stop looking for it now, right?

I don't care how poor or cold you are, you don't steal. I can't believe anyone would excuse behavior like that.

A kid in Chicago was killed for his coat. Is that okay ?

Ok. Agree. U got me there. I didn't think of it but I was so upset to have lost my coat that i dumped it. You are right I admit. I should have returned it to the restaurant. Oh well.

I'm the 12/11 20:42 poster - are you referring to my post? If so, I was not condoning theft, which I stated later. Giving a reason is not the same as saying it was ok to do.

Nice.
And we wonder why our kids say "shut up."

Parents.

My Dd lost her coat in school the other day so I went to the lost and found that help her check. Found two newish coats (one a north face!) slashed up and cut in strips there. So sad. Why do kids do these things ? Maybe OP, would your dd have been a target for a prank?

Stop putting the blame where it doesn't belong. I didn't see where OP specified the type of coat, but even if it was a desirable brand why would that matter? Is it somehow "acceptable" to take something that doesn't belong to you if it is a high end item? Nobody deserves to get their stuff stolen regardless of brand or cost, so this comment and the attitude it reveals is completely ridiculous.

No it isn't acceptable to steal any coat. I was just curious to know if the brand was a high end coat or a coat that a lot of other kids might have, too. And actually what I should have asked is:is it a generic trendy looking coat that a lot of kids might own. Or is it a unique looking coat.

A blue wind breaker for instance might be easily mistaken for their own. A pink, polka dot coat not so much.

Oops. In that case, I badly misjudged your intent and I apologize for my abrupt post in response to yours. Your post does raise some potentially useful questions when considered the way you intended.

Classy, PPs. If everyone on DCUM took the time to clarify points with each other as you two have done, this would be such a more civil place! Thank you. Is it the holiday spirit?

The stuff in the lost and found is trashed. I think the teachers take the good stuff home.

Sometimes kids do this innocently, is my point. I really don't think most elementary aged kids are doing this on purpose.

Check the lost and found in a week.

What I see is a coat exchange. Their old ratty coat for DCs new coat.

We had a girl "borrow" and refused to return my DDs Uggs. I finally had to drop by her house and pick them up. She wore them to school every day but refused to give them back. I did not want to make a big fuss b/c I began to think the other girl had a mental problem. Spoiled rotten.

I have seen some parents with so many coats in their house that they honestly can't recognize. My dd visited a friends house and suddenly it got cold and we asked to borrow a coat. Just a week later, when we returned it, she couldn't even recognize her own daughter's coat!
