Why do people drink out of mason jars?

When I was in college, I used to save jars from jelly, pickles, tomato sauce, and mason jars from people's occasional attempts at home pickling/canning and use them as glasses, as did most of my friends. I was poor and cheap, and didn't have all that many glasses, plus sometimes people would get drunk and break glasses. Worked just fine. A lot of hipsterism comes out of being cheap.

Well since they're now selling mason style drinking jars complete with colored lid with a hole for a straw, I think it may be pretty mainstream now

And with this, hipster mason jar drinking will return to historic norms.
