There are pro's and con's: Almond Milk and Cow's Milk Compared
Compared to cow's milk, almond milk is the much healthier choice. Almond milk contains a wide variety of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function. Almond milk also contains high levels of antioxidants, so it can help prevent many types of cancer and slow the signs of aging. Almond milk is also great for those who can't drink cow's milk due to lactose intolerance, or a casein or gluten allergy; however, those with tree nut allergies should avoid almond milk because it could elicit a dangerous allergic reaction. Whole cow's milk contains a lot more calories and fat than almond milk, making almond milk the better choice for those on a diet. Cow's milk also contains saturated fat and cholesterol; almond milk is free of both saturated fat and cholesterol, making it a healthier choice, especially for those with heart problems. While cow's milk contains high levels of calcium, and is fortified with vitamins A and D to help you meet your daily requirements of these vitamins, almond milk contains high levels of a wide range of necessary vitamins and therefore has a higher nutritional value than cow's milk. The only thing that cow's milk has more of than almond milk is protein; cow's milk has eight grams of protein per serving while almond milk has only one gram per serving. |
I thought I did too but now my 13 year old is also a borderline fattie (thanks whoever said that!) and consider myself 'big'. We have the Horizons FAt Free. Is that skim? |
+1 Wow, just WOW! I can't believe so many folks on this forum think we are suppose to drink milk from a mammal other than human. The gov't has done a fantastic job with their marketing and brainwashing even "educated" ppl into thinking our bodies need the "nutrients" that are in non-human milk. Amazing!! |
Almond milk contains high levels of a wide range of necessary vitamins BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER ADD THE VITAMINS TO THE ALMOND MILK. You'd get the same result, for a lot less money, by taking a multi-vitamin -- although I agree that a multi-vitamin wouldn't have the same effect on your breakfast cereal. |
Who says that "we are supposed to"? The point is that some of us can. So why shouldn't we? |

First they start criticizing fluid milk, and then they come for your cheese. Beware!
Also, on the subject of almond milk (which I do buy because one of my kids likes it): http://www.motherjones.com/tom-philpott/2014/07/lay-off-almond-milk-ignorant-hipsters |
| My kids drink 2% but I may start giving whole a try. Of the 3, only my 7 year old is on the weight chart at 2nd percentile, my two older girls are still not - despite lots of milk drinking. We go through at least 3 gallons a week. All 3 are super active. |
I'm not the PP, but are you really justifying doing something because you 'can?' |
Replying to myself.. I 'can' run over people in the street. I 'can' steal money from old people who can't chase me. Should I? No, because it's wrong, like it's wrong to torture animals because you 'can' drink their milk when you don't need to. |
+1. It isn't good for us and it isn't healthy, but the meat and dairy industry has strong influence in our politicians and we get fed an unhealthy line of bullshit. |
| We use whole milk. |
So the reason I shouldn't drink milk (or use dairy products in general) is because I'm torturing animals needlessly? What things do you do that you don't need to do? If you make a list, I will tell you why those things are so harmful that you shouldn't do them. Please put "have a child/have children" at the top of the list -- that's probably the single most harmful thing you can do. |
| milk is kind of ookey. |

Not a PP but it's partly that it's harmful to animals but I think what the previous people have said, mainly, is that cow's milk is unhealthy for humans and it is the very strong dairy lobby that has convinced the last couple of generations otherwise. You could read up on it. The China Study is a good place to start. |
| 1% and skim milk have too much suger compared to 2 % and whole milk. |
