Not even close. Those schools have too much "diversity". Code word for too many blacks and Hispanics.

Interesting. It seems that at least QO draws from some pretty pricy areas. I guess some not so pricy areas too.

Do you think that there are no affluent black people or Hispanic people in Montgomery County? Or poor white people? Yes, income and race are correlated in Montgomery County, but not perfectly correlated. The "not even close" PP had it right.

^^^or poor Asian people, either. But I don't think that white people object to poor Asian people nearly as much, because of that "model minority" stuff.

1. Churchill-Whitman
2. Wootton-WJ
3. The magnets and IBs

I'd agree with this.

How good the school is does not matter - because they are all MCPS schools.

Question to ask is - How good a student is your kid? Can he work hard? Is he bright/gifted/driven?

Then ask - Are you great, supportive parents? Is your marriage strong or will his education get derailed because of divorce/custody issues in the family? Can you give him a solid family life? Is there a chance that your kid will get into bad influences and experiment with drugs and alcohol? Do you value education?

The top 6 schools in Maryland are in MCPS, so yes, MoCo has great schools. However, if you look at the county overall compared to all other counties in Maryland, MoCo ranks 10th. The reason is because there are so many kids in MCPS, with such widely varying school performances, that the poorly performing schools weight down the well-performing schools. Could a child succeed or fail at any school, and are there other, outside influences on success? Of course. But, it also DOES matter where you send your kid to school.

Maryland also claims to be the top in education. These are claims based on meaningless indicators: THE MSAs. Even Jerry Weast admitted they are meaningless.

Because of the friends they will make.

I am sure there are great kids at every school but 6th grade English is not the same at every school.

Any kid will be successful in any MCPS HS based on -

1) How smart the kid is and how hard he works?
2) The home environment of the student and the value placed on education.

.... school is possibly the lowest on this scale. Statistics showing how well W students or IB or magnets are doing is skewed, because these kids are getting/have always got - extra enrichment (tutoring, coaching, museum trips etc) OUTSIDE of school. So, the STUDENTS and PARENTS are the key, not the school.

If Ws were so omnipotent in making kids smarter, there would be no W students getting B, C, D grades.

Bunch of bullshit!

A C at Whitman is the same as an A at Northwest! AND your kid won't make friends with poors.

(I'm being sarcastic.)

What sets these schools apart? They still have predominantly white students from upper income homes, and parents will pay a premium to move into the clusters that feed into these schools.

Always?

Should we call them "the real-estate-premium schools"?

We should call them the "Segregation is Alive and Well In MoCo" schools.

TO some degree teachers cater the standards of an assignment to the needs of the class.
