I second the idea of finding the right social groups at the state school. There are ways to make big schools feel small. I have seen too many kids who fail to find the right social groups during their freshman year who respond by transferring. . . And then need to start from scratch again. I even know a few who transferred away as sophomores and back to the first place as juniors. I'd just consider the possibility that the school you initially thought was a good choice really is and can become one with some thoughtful planning.
