Look just a few posts above. I think the place is great for certain types of kids, but it just isn't "funky." The closest I can come is "well-bred hipster" and even that's stretching it for most of the student body. |
George Mason is funky and is more prestigious than va tech |
George Mason is known for being conservative, which is a long way from funky. |
+1. GMU is a great school, but it is most certainly not funky. |

Guilford College in NC |
I think any school with Quaker roots is going to have some funk going on. Maybe not William Penn U (not saying it doesn't, just saying I don't know anyone who went). |
No -- a little preppy/crunchy, maybe, but not funky. (from an alum) |
It may not be funky, but it's definitely not conservative. |
NYU - Gallatin School of Individualized Study may interest your DS. It's crazy expensive, though... |
How about Macalester, Pitzer, and Goucher as a safety? Also think that Sarah Lawrence, Skidmore, and Haverford would be great options. |
LOL! |
New College of Florida - super funky and attracts some very good students, though it's changed some recently and I'm a bit out of date on it. Pass/fail and contract system, so very different from a traditional school.
Colorado College? Also, second/third suggestions to look at Macalester. |
Ithaca college |
OP, reporting back. DC chose Sarah Lawrence and is very happy there. An amazing amount of contact with professors (one on one conferences every other week, most classes 15 students and under), very arty. Suburb of NYC so goes in easily but can live in a quieter area. Its only been a few months but those of you with similar kids should consider it. |
