Do NOT take dog training advice from Cesar.
And leash your dog. |
No, it's not better to unleash your dog. If ALL dogs are leashed, it's not a problem, because both owners can keep their dogs from coming into contact. The problem is when one dog is off leash and the other isn't. It's irresponsible, and in most places unlawful, to NOT have your dog leashed/contained unless you are in a park where it is specifically allowed. |
No, the reason why most people train their dog to a leash or keep their dog on a leash is because that is the law. I don't care how well-trained your dog is, it is illegal (where I live at least) to walk your dog without a leash or to purposefully "drop" the leash, allowing the dog to technically be off leash. |
One probem is too many people think thEIr dog is special and different and doesn't need a leash while all the other dogs need one, lol |

You know, dogs have personalities. And they are also animals with strong instincts. The worst people I've met are the ones who think that it is possible for a person to have COMPLETE control of a dog. Some dogs are more aggressive by nature. Training helps. But the worst thing any owner can do is assume they have complete control of their dog. In my experience, the worst accidents (fights and bites) happened on account of those deluded and arrogant owners who, because they read a few books and watched a few episodes of Cesar Milan, foolishly believe they have complete control. Actual Animal behaviorists agree that even with domesticated dogs, even with proper training, even training from the time of puppyhood, there is still an element out of your control. Not only do some dogs (like some people) have greater tendencies toward aggression, but sometimes the slightest trigger can cause centuries of ingrained instincts to kick in. This is why the best Pit Bull owners are the ones who, despite all of the training and bonding, NEVER take chances. |
