Organic/healthy/natural food-seekers: do you even ever go to Giant or Safeway anymore?

Anonymous
No- I almost never go to Giant or Safeway anymore. The main reason being that their produce is subpar and they don't have as much organic produce.

I don't shop there because the things I buy (organic etc.) are MORE expensive there than at WF. This is maybe unique to DC proper but it's what I've found.

Also, they don't have pastured meat, pastured dairy, or pastured eggs.

Just not worth it to me.

No, I rarely go to Giant or Safeway anymore. I mostly shop at Roots or Whole Foods. There isn't much I need from Giant or Safeway. I do sometimes go to Harris Teeter though.

Does this entire thread seem like a gigantic pissing contest, about who can be the healthiest/buy the most premium foods, to anybody else?

No. It seems like a lot of people who shop at a particular store because that's what works best for their families are tired of being told that we are wildly self-indulgent spendthrifts.

No I only go to Trader Joes, Mom's Organic Market and Whole Foods.

For example, they don't offer any eggs from free-range chickens. I think the only milk brand that I'd consider buying is Stonyfield. They have a really poor selection of organic vegetables and fruits....and almost everything Giant has that's "organic" is the company's own "Nature's Promise" brand, which I've heard is a joke.

I sometimes feel like when it comes to food in this country, we are all mostly locked in to places like Giant and Safeway, because of cost, proximity, etc.

Just be glad you have ready access to food. Millions of people, including other Americans, don't. Make wise choices at the regular grocery stores and ignore the rest. This is really the definition of a first world problem.

And BTW, did you read the recent studies about organic produce?

Yes and it was such BS! It was the most ridiculous study ever. It did not address any of the reasons why people eat organic!

I think people who shop exclusively at these stores are overpaying for things that they could buy at the normal grocery store (plus, Safety and Giant do carry plenty of organic options as well) but if you have the money, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Actually, Checkbook did a comparison, and if you're shopping organic, it's a little less expensive to shop at WF.

This is true. B/C the large chain grocery stores do not specialize in organics, their organics are usually way more expensive than Whole Foods.
