McLean vs. Arlington Schools

Anonymous
Gotta go with Arlington if you want quality of life to be better. I think the schools are evenly matched, Arlington is that much closer to downtown, and much more friendly to working families by guaranteeing extended day. Oh, and I just read that Washington-Lee had more National Merit Semifinalists this year than Yorktown and H-B put together. Not a dis to the aforementioned, just reminding that all the high schools are very good...

Not sure about this year, but last year the enrollment at Haycock was around 850 students. Approximately 44% were in the AAP program and, of course, a substantial number of those kids had Haycock as their base school. I don't believe FCPS has released statistics for the current school year yet.

Haycock AAP students for 2012-2013 by base school and grade level:

Chesterbrook: 3rd: 6 4th: 6 5th: 12 6th: 20 TOTAL: 44
Franklin Sherman: 3rd: 18 4th: 23 5th: 17 6th: 16 TOTAL: 74
Haycock: 3rd: 29 4th: 48 5th: 39 6th: 34 TOTAL: 150
Lemon Road (has LLIV): 3rd: 2 4th: 0 5th: 5 6th: 2 TOTAL: 9
Shrevewood (has LLIV): 3rd: 28 4th: 21 5th: 12 6th: 9 TOTAL: 70
Timber Lane: 3rd: 6 4th: 4 5th: 3 6th: 5 TOTAL: 18
Westgate (has LLIV): 3rd: 19 4th: 20 5th: 11 6th: 11 TOTAL: 61
TOTALS: 3rd: 108 4th: 122 5th: 99 6th: 97 TOTAL: 426

Where did you get these numbers?

And you've got your LLIV info all mixed up. Of the schools listed, only Chesterbrook and Timber Lane have LLIV. The others do not.

From the Level IV Task Force. And I copied the LLIV information from their handout. So if there is some "info all mixed up" it is their info, not mine.

Creating another GT center that served kids in the Madison and Marshall pyramids might be one way to deal with overcrowding at Haycock. It's not the only way. Didn't you see the other post proposing to move the Franklin Sherman AAP kids at Haycock to Churchill Road?

Whether you're in Arlington or McLean, you face some risk of redistricting or program realignment over the next few years, probably more so in Arlington than in McLean. There's really no justification for taking it as a personal rebuke.

What "level IV task force" are you talking about? I'm a bit shocked that our county is trying to make decisions based on flawed data.

The FCPS Level IV Task Force, chaired by Joyce Van Tassel-Baska.

Is there contact information or are there meetings?

I would love to set them straight on their data before we are sent back to a school that does not actually have local level IV.

There are meetings but I think they have finished with recommendations. I guess you would contact FCPS, but I don't know for certain. I am not on the task force. The task force members included people from instructional services, facilities, the finance office, and I think some teachers. They are circulating their three recommendations among community members to get feedback.

What are the three recommendations?

If you are not on the task force, where did you get the information? We are part of Haycock and have not heard anything since the big meeting with Marty Smith last year.

I cannot recall the specifics. The first recommendation was to have a Level IV Center at every middle school and create more centers so there would be one or two Level IV Centers that feed to every high school pyramid and this would roll out starting with next year's 3rd graders (all current kids would be grandfathered). The second recommendation was to fund full-time Advanced Academic Resource Teachers so they could help with the teaching load at Centers. The third recommendation was to only address the three (or maybe it was 4 plus two more - I recall Greenbriar West being mentioned) by capping the centers and sending any new Center-eligible kids (that didn't have the Center as their base school) to different centers instead of those schools, and without transportation being provided.

At a FCPS meeting last night.

(PP here) Why are you being so cagey about the information? For some of us with kids in the AAP center, whose school information is incorrect in what you cited, this is very important. I have a child who is well established in the center.

OP, if you read the five or so previous responses, you get a sense for why you want to be in Arlington.

There are whole threads devoted entirely to upcoming ES rezoning in Arlington, which show why OP might prefer to be in McLean.

It's ultimately a matter of personal preference. IMO, McLean has the edge in schools and overall quality of its residential areas. Arlington has the edge in ease of commuting and extended day care. In our case, we do not need extended day care and would not be happy in Arlington, which has too much of a cramped "outer borough" feel to us. Others might feel that McLean is too suburban for their own tastes.
