When it comes to marriage, I don't think the government can discriminate who the partners are on the basis of gender. If folks want to put forward legislation to ban divorce or assure that only fertile couples get married, well, good luck with that.

Hell, we already changed the terms of marriage when a grooms family could no longer trade livestock for their bride. When people argue that we can't change the terms of marriage or that the bible condems it I roll my eyes. In Deuteronomy (sp?) it says that a man should marry a virgin and if he finds out she isn't a virgin he should kill her. Odd how bible thumpers seem to know that this is wrong and don't insist that we follow this rule?

It just seems absurd - you need a woman and a man to have a baby so a marriage should be between a man and woman only.

Its fine if you don't believe in this and you are free not to marry someone of the same sex. I assume that you do not expect everyone else to think the same way that you do? I assume that you do not believe that there should be only religion and one belief system in the US. I assume that you value our constitution and do believe that the government should not enact laws that enforce and reflect only one religious belief system?

Or are you not a supporter of freedom and a government that respects civil liberties. Are you not patriotic? Would you prefer a communist, dictatorship or other type of government that enforces one belief system? Would you prefer Sharia law?

Anal nuptials are the fast lane to hell. Just sign a contract... The "marriage" word is a definate attempt to make it seem ok with traditional faith. Just legalize contracts for fudge-packers , donut bumpers, polygamists, nambla guys and bestial partnerships and stay away from religious hijacking.

You and the conservatives had your chance at making civil unions that were truly equal under the law. But your hatred got in the way, and you couldn't bring yourselves to do it. So now gay people will get marriage.

Jesus had no objection to what happened to sodom and gammorah. Jesus has no problem with bad mouthing sin.

I don't believe in God, but I don't try to put laws in place stopping people from going to church. We are all entitled to our beliefs, as long as we don't impose them on others.

Which is why calling it "marriage" is inappropriate . Just keep it secular and call it a contract.
