Weird question- how to clean big outdoor trash cans

Anonymous
A PP mentioned the garbage collectors. For their sakes, especially in the hot summer months, it would be good for everyone to regularly clean their garbage cans and avoid letting them become stanky horror shows.

Love the tip to drill holes in the bottom of the garbage cans -- thanks pps!

Just rinse it out and be done with it. What am I missing here?

You disinfect to get rid of smell and eliminate maggots. Flys are attracted to the smell, then comes the maggots.

Have then send you new one

"Canfresh Garbage Recycling System" makes garbage recycle easy and simple. No bad smell anymore, no maggots and flies anymore. Just search for "Allcanfresh".

If it rains during the day that the trash is picked up, I usually take the can back up my driveway (after being emptied), flip the lid and leave out in the rain to give it a rain bath. Then I empty it, give it a few sprays with bleach and let it dry out. Easy.

In Alexandria, is anyone aware of a sanitation service for trash cans ( a friend of mine does this in another county and I always thought it sounded ridiculous) or a good way to do this ourselves.

Oh you mean the ones we keep in our garage because its really tacky and gross to leave them outside?

Ummm of course I wash my hands but what about all of the other stuff door knobs and handles and railings etc touched along the way... those are still dirty from the bacteria that you tracked on it from touching your undisinfected trash can. silly, dirty people.

You realize that as soon as you disinfect your trashcan, a bird shits on it, right?

And who touches the inside of the trash an when you're throwing trash away?

PBFC.

You are wasting your time, pp. There are some serious germaphobes on DCUM. There is even one poster who only uses paper towels to wash dishes.

Trash can cleaning… a chore that most of us don’t want to do! Our outdoor garbage cans are often smelly, grimy and generally repulsive! ??

To touch on a few of the previous posts, there are trash can cleaning companies throughout the US – the benefit of hiring one of these companies is firstly, not having to do it yourself! But the other benefits of a professional company doing it is the use of high power pressure cleaning equipment with the ability to use high heat water and that they collect the wash water in a tank onboard the trash can cleaning truck. This water is often filtered then safely and legally transferred to the sanitary sewer system – preventing dirty, stinky water running down our neighborhood streets, and perhaps more importantly stops this waste water reaching our municipal storm water systems.

In the Kissimmee, Davenport, Celebration and Orlando areas in Florida check out Clean Cans (http://www.cleancans.com) for your neighborhood trash can cleaning service.

My mother in law does it for me every time she visits (bleach and water). Love my MIL!

You seem to disagree with the experts. From the web-site for the Chesapeake Bay Program:
http://www.chesapeakebay.net/TakeAction/howtotips
Bay Tip
Avoid Pesticide Pollution

If a pesticide spills or leaks, don't use a hose to clean up. Soak up the liquid with an absorbent material like sawdust or kitty litter, then sweep the material into a plastic bag and clean the area with a mixture of water and bleach.

But if you really want to avoid bleach, you can use Simple Green or 7th Generation Disinfectant. Both are natural disinfectants, safe for waterways.

I use a power washer, no detergent or bleach. After it dries I use those big contractor bags as a liner. Only need to clean the bin twice a year and you can store it without smelling in the garage.

My husband buys these commercial odor things and sticks them under the lid. The current one smells like oranges.
