You can try Loreal Couluer Experite (dumb name -can't spell it) http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=fs797843#sku2082909 The highlights take a few tries but i've like the overall look and for some reason the base color has turned out better for me. |
Is there a way of preventing grey/white hair from turning yellow without using that purple shampoo which turned my hair a lovely shade of blue??? |
Hi all,
I'm 46, active, young looking(I get asked for id at the casino, boyfriend says they want to know my name...lol) Regardless, I used to have to colour it brown every 3weeks,for the last year at least it'll has been 2 weeks. If I don't, io feel like I like aweful! When Ido., I feel so much better. When I was in my 20's, I worked in a hair salon and a hair dresser, who I felt was a colour technitian before her time, told me boxes work just the same as hair salon colours. They are all bad for the hair. So ever since, I use 1 box, divide in two, and use only half the colour with half the peroxide and I save the rest for 2 a weeks later. It's fine except now I feel my'halo'. Shows a week after. I hate colouring, but always feel better when I do.is this normal? It's crazy but I'm not ready to let it go, especially if i get told I look younger than my 36 year old sister. |
I started to go gray when I was 18. I have been coloring my own roots for almost 20 years. At first I only had to color every 3 weeks or so, now I color my roots once a week. My natural hair color is very dark brown and I am 75% gray.
For years I used box hair color; Loreal Preference. I would mix half the bottle of color with half the bottle of developer into a bowl and apply it with a tint brush, to my roots ONLY. However I learned from my hairstylist that box hair color uses the standard 20 volume developer, and because my hair only requires color to be deposit onto my gray that I should only use a 10 volume developer. The 10 volume developer is more gentle on my scalp than 20 volume, which is good because I am using it every week. (Developer comes in volumes ranging from 10 - 40. The higher the volume the more peroxide it has to pull color out of your hair so new color can be deposited. If you are coloring your hair to go lighter, than you'd require a higher volume developer.) They say if you use a creme color you should use a liquid developer and if you use a liquid color you should use a creme developer. But this is what I say... If you are coloring just your roots then use creme color and creme developer. It stays better put where you place it and doesn't spread/ run down the hair strand like a creme and liquid together do. I also found when I used a liquid and a creme, the color would splatter very easily on my walls, door, floor, etc.. This is what I do. First - I only color my roots. Never all my hair. I alternate: 1 week I color my hair line and the top of my head (areas that part), then the next week I color all my roots. Items needed: Hair color mixing bowl, Hair color extra wide tint brush, Measuring Becker, Hair color whisk, Fitted rubber gloves, Baby wipes. (Always protect your area. I lay down a kitchen garbage bag on my bathroom counter, a small 5X3 blanket to protect my floor, and an old towel over my bathroom cupboards.) Product (Bought at Sally's Beauty): ION COLOR BRILLIANCE PERMANENT CREME COLOR, ION SENSITIVE SCALP 10 VOLUME CREME DEVELOPER. I measure out equal parts of color and developer in my beaker. The creme color comes out like toothpaste, so I measure the creme developer first then squeeze the creme color into the developer till the developer rises to the correct measurement on the beaker. I whisk the products together till thick, creamy, and consistent. I transfer the product to the mixing bowl. I first apply the color product to my hairline (including the hairline behind my ears), as this is the area of the most stubborn gray hair. I then color the top of my head; parting my hair from side to side. I start at the front and move towards the back, continuing all the way back to ear height. I then do my sides, parting my hair from front to back, stopping just below the top of my ear. (I alternate sides, one week I do my right side first then the next time I do my left side first). I then color the back of my head from my ear height down. It usually takes me 45 min to color my entire head and I rinse it out when its been 1 hour. RINSING: I rinse out all the color with warm water till the water runs clear. I towel dry. Because the hair color has stained my skin on my hairline I take a toothbrush and put a dab of shampoo on it and scrub my hairline with it till the color is off my skin. I rinse the shampoo out. I towel dry. I use a separate tint brush (not the same one I use to color with) and apply ION COLOR DEFENSE AFTER COLOR SEALER (but any conditioner would do) to the roots that got color. I then apply my regular hair conditioner to the rest of my hair, massaging scalp and hair for 2 min or so, rinse and towel dry. Mixing my own color is much cheaper than box color. One tube of Ion Creme Color is $5.50 and it yields 4-5 colorings for me. I bought the 32 oz Developer for $5.80 in October of 2013 and I have used just over half the bottle so far, I would guess. One box of L'oreal Preference hair color (which only yielded 2 colorings) cost me $12.00. You can see the savings!! I hope my experience listed here helps you. And If anyone has something to share with me, please. I am always looking for ways to care for my hair. |
Can anyone recommend a box color from the drugstore for dark brown hair and silver roots? (I don't mind a little reddish but want to keep it fairly dark, but not black.)
THANKS! |
This is so informative! I also dye my hair once a week and use a similar process, but I was always freaked out that this wasn't normal and I was damaging my hair and scalp to the point that I would eventually become bald. The only difference is that I shampoo my hair immediately after colouring(because I can't stand the way the dye smells and I'm paranoid that if I don't shampoo it, the dye smell will linger). I have long, dark hair to my middle of my back (I'm guessing 75% gray?) and I do the part once a week, all the roots every other week, then include the ends once a month. This has worked for me for the past 4 years (44 now) and everyone thinks it's my natural colour. |
I agree that this is so helpful! I do something like this myself at home. I use Goldwell TopChic professional color- I buy from Amazon. I also use 10 developer and do every 1-2 weeks for just the roots. I put it on, exercise while it is working, then wash it out. the details and tips in this write up are terrific- thank you for taking the time to do it. |
Every 6-8 weeks for me. It is a hassle, but I can't go any longer than that. I am 46 and have been coloring grays for about 5 years or so. |
3 weeks. Very short hair. |
3 weeks here too. And it looks bad by then. I'm always glad when the weather turns cold so I can cover up with hats! |
I too color my roots once a week - part areas (top of my head), then a full every 2-3 weeks. I touch up the sides often. Sucks but better than the alternative - letting the grays show. |
The best color ,longest lasting is OLIA my hair is dark brown so i use med golden brn. lasts longer tha what they used at the beauty shop.the golden has a little red tone in it my beautician says that locks into the hair better to color the hair ,love it but hate the roots every twu weeks

Never. |
I'm 49 and haven't colored my hair in 10 years. I'm about 75% gray - white gray, which looks great. The texture is perfect. Do I look "older?" I suppose. But what what's 49 supposed to look like? |
I use this - http://www.phyto-usa.com/needs/hair-type/gray-white-hair/phytargent.html My mother, husband and daughter noticed how shiny and bright my hair was after one wash. |
