In general they recommend a rabies shot if you wake up with a bat in your bedroom, because bat teeth are so tiny that there's no way to know if you were bitten in your sleep - and there's no cure for rabies once symptoms arise. It's just a better safe than sorry scenario, since you didn't know if the bat was rabid.
