Husband taking a job in Springfield, VA -- where to live?

Poverty is corrosive. So long as poor kids make up a fraction of the school population, things are manageable. That's why we should be working to reduce poverty--not blaming those who point out its negative effects.

One of my pet peeves is suburbanites who pretend not to be able to comprehend why DCPS has to spend so much money for such minimal results. It's because we've got a multi-century legacy of slavery that's crippled generation after generation of inner city learners:

The sooner that some of that poverty gets distributed to the suburbs, the better off the poor will be in the long term.

One of my pet peeves is urbanites who act like they are God's gift to humanity by enrolling their kids in some marginal DCPS elementary school and then reappear touting Whitman or Sidwell a few years later.

OP again. We are in VA this weekend and very discouraged. Everything is SO much more expensive than what we're used to! The real estate agent who took us around today showed us some shockingly run-down properties for about 3x our current rent.

The entire reason we decided to move was because my husband only makes $72,000 at his current firm and the new job in Springfield would get us a nice salary bump. However, I am quickly finding out where that extra salaries goes! :-/

Very very stressed out by the housing hunt...

What is your budget OP?

Did you see this house today, OP?

It is listed for sale, but it also comes up for rent on another site.

It is in an amazing neighborhood, and a fabulous elementary school.

If you haven't seen it, this house is definitely worth looking at tomorrow. Good luck!

I would be happy living in Madison with a salary of $72K.
What you also need to realize is that an area like this has a big city problems, i.e. drug infested neighborhoods etc. You might find a nice looking area, but with its issues it is really hard to raise a family there.
We moved here from Milwaukee years ago and there are times I regret making the move

Yeah, I think I'd be happy, too.

You won't be when your kids get closer to this age.

Or maybe you'll think with a clear head and won't rationalize your bigoted decisions.

It is this area. Any other place I would not even think about it.
The city ghetto is horrible and you cannot really isolate yourself from it all.

If your husband will be making less than $120,000, I'm not sure I'd move. The cost of living is so much higher than in Madison.

How old are your kids? Lecture us some more when your kid goes through K-12 in DCPS, PGCPS, or AlxCPS.

OP, I wouldn't move here if your hubby is only making $80-90k and you like where you're at in Madison (friends, family, schools, etc.)

20:20, don't forget the urbanites who're getting places in Ashburn (and nary a thank you from me, working hard to ensure DCUMers can have their place in Ashburn.)

Is there a similar kind-hearted poster in Frederick who's making sure Linganore and Damascus are still available?
