OP here- wow- I'm surprised I got that much feedback but thank you.. I will look into coverdell as someone pointed out- and I'm not sure if what we have is enough but I'm just nervous about having enough with the market swings- I did move everything to super boring bonds etc. but it was depressing to see one year we put in let's say 20K and it was at 12K at the end of the year. And we did select age appropriate investments. I love the feedback so thank you.

OP - you need to read up on investing. By moving the $12k to bonds, you locked in your losses. If you have a long-term horizon, you need to think and act long term, not short term.

I looked up the return rates since we move the funds- the other more volatile funds fared less and have been negative for the past year.. our conservative ones have increased at a higher rate and are up this year.. we'll go back to other investments, but had we stayed were we were - we would be out even more. I guess I need to read more on investing.

OP, market timing rarely works. Just pick a strategy & stick with it even when it makes your stomach churn. That doesn't mean never reallocating your money, but it means following your plan over the long term. Bailing out during down markets & trying to figure out when to get back in is not a good idea.

The Dream Act has not been passed, but it says it provides a way to gain citizenship for illegal alien minors by entering the military or going to college after high school. It does NOT provide scholarship or grant funding. It also makes the student ineligible for Pell grants.... The PP is an idiot stirring up poop.

Nothing. In a couple years, my husband will be able to pass his GI bill to his dependents, so that will help with some of them. But we have always been clear that college is their responsibility. They can enlist and earn the GI bill, do ROTC, get athletic/academic scholarships, go to community college for two years and then transfer, etc. Our older kids have been earning and saving money since they were 11, and we expect them to work through high school and college.

This was how it was for me, for my parents, for their parents. I attended an Ivy, worked full time, Phi Beta Kappa junior year. Anything is possible if you work hard enough and think outside the box.
