What's so great about the beach?

Yep have kids and my kids do like the beach. But they also loved our trip to Disney this year. If we went to Disney every single year so many people would most likely look at us like we were crazy and ask why we go to Disney so much but wouldn't get that same question by going to the beach every year.

I find the mountains to be relaxing as well and my kids enjoy it too. So why aren't the mountains the *preferred* vacation spot among a large number of people instead of the beach?

The mountains have bugs. I'm not a hiker.

And the beach has sharks.

Absolutely hate Rehoboth etc...too crowded and the water is too cold. Once the water is warm enough the jelly fish arrive. There is nothing relaxing to me about sitting an arms length from another family.

OBX- dont get the appeal. Have to carry a bunch of crap down there, walk my stuff out to the beach and make our beds in the AM. Not a vacation IMO.

We love the Caribbean...step out the door and i am on the beach. Someone cleans my room and sets up my beach spot. I jsut have to watch my kid....BLISS

How freakin' lazy can you get re: OBX? Not having to work and commute makes it a vacation. I don't want daily maid service or to have to eat out every meal. I like my privacy and downtime. Of course, I don't cook much when I'm not on vacation and we do have a cleaning lady at home.

There aren't any around here. Going to the beach is cheap and easy if you're just going to OBX or places around here.

OBX ain't cheap. We just spent $3800 to rent a single family house for one week there.

We're going to Bethany soon for a couple of days. DH asked me the same question. He's not a fan of the beach, even though he grew up close to one. We're mainly going for our toddler. I'm more of a mountain person.

I like to go to the beach to relax and be a complete vegetable, breathe the ocean air, feel the breeze on my skin, not care about what time it is and collect sea shells with DCs. It's soothing to my eyes to stare out into the big vast blue and soothing to my ears to listen to the waves. I don't care about fancy restaurants or going out, I just want to recharge.

I just got back from OC and saw people doing yoga on paddle boards in the water. I'll have to try that next time.

I like the beach, but can get the same recharge in the mountains, too.

I like being near the ocean, but Wwhat I don't understand is just sitting and baking in the sun on the beach for hours and hours and getting all sticky and covered in sand. We often vacation to a town in New England where my parents have a house and go for walks by the water and do other fun activities there. But we never really spend time just sitting on the beach.

My kids enjoy boogie-boarding, burying me in sand, building sandcastles...colelcting shells or sighting dolphins

Rehoboth and Dewey Beach are 2 of only 4 beaches in the US to get a 5 star rating, -- the best in the country for water quality and pollution control. Over 3000 US beaches were reviewed.

"These beaches not only received the highest five-star rating based on water quality and best practices for testing and public notification but also had perfect testing results for the past three years indicating a history of superior water quality"

but is the water green? esthetics count...
vs my home....

Get a tent!! We did this for my skin cancer phobic very white DW this year, and she LOVED it!

I wish I didn't. But I seriously count the minutes until we can leave and go to the pool. Sadly, my DH and kids love the beach and my ILs have a house there so we go a lot. I suck it up and go bc my family enjoys it, but I'd rather do anything else.

Ditto. I grew up away from any kind of water, and, honestly, I don't see how swimming in the ocean is so much better than swimming in a pool. And I also hate being hot in sand.

To each their own, I'd say. If you love the beach, great, if you love cities, good for you, too.

A tent and rash guards are the best.

Don't go on the beach between 11am-2pm (naptime for us, anyway).

We always wear short-sleeve rash guards, and swim trunks/shorts.

It's not much more sun exposure that way, than a trip to the zoo/park.

I work 60+ hours a week and work out 4 to 5 times a week. For one week a year, I want to "just sit[] on the beach."

It beats air fare for adults and kids, hotel stay with multiple rooms, eating out for every meal etc....I'd go to OBX any day and will!

I grew up and lived here all my life and I didn't "get" beaches either until DH and I went to Hawaii and later Aruba. The beaches around here are gross and dirty to me, but I get why people find it relaxing. I am dreaming of sitting on the sand now and reading a good book in the sun.
