Myth. |
Because a public school would not be able to provide the security that Sidwell does. The President's children are a security issue, the Sec of Ed's kid, not so much. |
Amy Carter went to public school. |
I knew someone would bring this up. Times are different, my friend. |
| Sidwell does not provide any security. The secret service keeps the kids safe. I would not like my kid to go to school where armed guards go and think it is normal |

20:45 - at least you have a brain in your head.
21:10 - not so much. Obama is not the Secretary of Education, you dumbass. But I suppose I am getting no where fast on this one. |
| I agree with PP that 300-400k sounds right, given proper priorities. Below that seems to just be trying to keep up with the perceived Joneses. What is going to happen when Junior does not have what it takes to be accepted or worse STAY in the college of your choice? It pays to be competent and qualified on ones own merits, in the real world. Does no one here realize this? Some of PP's comments are truly naive. |
You are right that Sidwell does not provide any direct security for the kids, but can bet that Secret Service does a survey of each of the schools Obama's family considered to see which would be easiest to safeguard. Also, a private school as a lot more leeway in provide passive security than a public school. |

How many grandparents pay tuition? We have a child at one of the special needs schools where the tuition is actually higher than it is at the Big 3 b/c speech therapy, OT, etc. is incorporated into the day. Between the tuition plus the outside tutoring, therapy, private ST and OT ds still needs, we were getting killed. Grandparents said that they would pay tuition for next year which is a lifesaver. We are only doing private bc of ds' special needs. I have to wonder, though, if other grandparents pay for estate planning purposes or just to be generous.

A LOT of grandparents pay the tuition at the school our children attend. We do not have that luxury. Our HHI is just over 300K and we are pulling the kids out next year and sending them to our local elementary in Arlington because the $58,000 tuition is just not feasible for us anymore. And no, I will not be filling my closet with expensive shoes as a result. The money saved is going to go into savings, college funds, and a fund for our aging parents. |
| 15:55 - the first voice of reason on this thread. You are very wise, indeed. Are the rest of you Rockefellers or Vanderbilts? |
Yes, I know someone who was her classmate, who says that her memory of that year is mostly about bomb threats and disruptions. |
| Don't pay for private school unless you have fully funded your kids college account. Just because it is in private does not mean a free ride at college |
. I wouldn't think it would mean a free ride at all. Instead, the schooling remains a line item, so only the delta between private and college needs to be saved. Retirement should be fully funded. |
| How many of the advantages of private school would accrue to those who can't afford the skiing trips, summer vacations, and other things the truly upper upper crust (not the 250-400K HHI pretenders who're breaking the bank to send their kids to private) can afford? |
