New neighbors insisted on using my snowblower

Anonymous
Neighbors can be tricky.

We used to live in upstate New York and every Spring would rent a wood chipper from United Rentals to clean up a year’s worth of fallen branches and debris. We had to outfit our car with a trailer hitch, pay all the rental and insurance fees, and haul this thing into our backyard. Lots of work and expense. One year one of our neighbors (mid 40s) asked if they could borrow the wood chipper to use on their property. Another year, a different neighbor (mid 60s) asked if we could bring the chipper over to their yard and chop up a bunch of their branches. They actually expected us to do all the work.

It’s not like either of our neighbors was ineligible to rent a wood chipper of their own. Just saw an opportunity to bonus off our investment and hard work. Some people are just wired this way, OP.

This storm has been predicted for nearly two weeks. That is plenty of notice to buy a shovel or snowblower, or hire someone.

Not everyone is glued to the weather channel, gramps.
. You must be really stupid if that’s the only place this storm was talked about.

Your situation is a lot more clear-cut. OP's is different. He or she owns the machine, and has been given lots of example in which neighbors help each other out. I agree that the way the neighbors insisted is rude.

I shoveled elderly neighbors by hand, and another neighbor did it yesterday by hand.

We’re good neighbors though.

You suck.

We'd probably say "Hey, I get it, but the thing is it's really heavy machinery and it's a huge liability and I'm a lawyer and I just can't. But I can come take a pass this afternoon at 2pm. Would that work for you?"

Sometimes people get mad. I'm not gonna change my principles though. I'm that way to protect everyone.

I'm a lawyer, and I think you are ridiculous. Though I'm not an ambulance chaser, so maybe you have a better handle on things like this.

But, OP's neighbors are young and healthy, not elderly. So, why does OP suck? Or did you not read that part?

On my street we help each other out, especially a new neighbor. So maybe you loaned the machine, maybe you offer to use the machine on their yard (yes OP is scared of the snow blower). But I wouldn’t have let a new neighbor who asked for help leave without helping them make a plan.

We have our own snowblower and have already helped a few neighbor.

that's nice, but that's not OP's situation. They wanted to use the snowblower themselves, and OP said she can't use the heavy equipment herself. And then they grumbled about it.

FWIW, we have shoveled our neighbor's sidewalk when they were away.

OP's neighbor sounds entitled.

Moron, it was on regular news not just the weather channel. It was even on this forum.

You're selfish for not having shared your equipment and taught them how to use it. My snowblowing neighbor does both sides of the whole street.

You're also nasty and stupid for generalizing one incident to an entire generation.

np.. but imagine if the whole neighborhood asked OP to use their snowblower.

I’m going to be an a** today just in case someone else asks me for something tomorrow.

OP isn’t exactly a reliable narrator.

I think your neighbor's were rude and entitled to ask if they don't even really know you.

FWIW, DH has helped our neighbor a lot after they moved in, even helping chop down a tree, lending them tools, etc.. But we became friendly with them after they moved, and DH offered. They would not have asked if DH hadn't offered.
