How does taking the oil work?

Oil prices are at $58 a barrel. Venezuela oil sells at a $22 discount vs Brent. It cost $39-$56 a barrel to produce. Show me the money!

Trump said to all the oil executives that China has no wind generated power. He called it windmill areas. China has 725 GW of wind power as of early 2026 and will be around 1,300 by 2030. The US grid generates 1,200-1,215 GW.

Trump also said anyone buying these from the Chinese are suckers. Many of the oil companies in that room are involved in wind power generation. They have bought these from the Chinese. He called them suckers while asking them to invest 100 to 190 billion?

There CEOs are pretty smart businessmen. After meeting with Trump I bet they stay away from him.

Chavez took power and then he “took” everything. It’s called nationalization. Chavez
nationalized all sorts of things, including the lawful possessions of multinational petroleum companies.

Trump is simply de-nationalizing things.

What gives Trump the right? He’s looking to make money that’s all. It’s no better than when the CIA destroyed Chile by taking out their democratically elected president and put a brutal dictator in its place.

Trump and the people around him do not understand how the rest of the world works. The US grants private ownership of minerals rights through property rights. Though the US owns the minerals rights on public lands.

In the rest of the world minerals rights are owned by state. The state and oil companies work out deals to develop the assets but the state always retains the mineral rights.

So when nationalization is done the state is taking the infrastructure. The states pays fair market price for the infrastructure. The oil(the thing of value) is not part of this because the state never gives up its ownership.

The claim that Venezuela took “our” oil is total BS. It has always been Venezuela’s oil.

Oh and Saudi, Libya, Mexico, all OPEC members, etc have nationalized their oil production. Are we going to take that “back” too?

Wow that amount could have paid for healthcare. Nothing says winning like producing oil at $85 a barrel and selling it for $35. I guess you can make it up in volume?

I work with these people. They think what Trump is doing is a bad business deal (Exxon told him as much) but they also don't want to piss him off completely because they need the government for other things. They will never stay away from him.

They will fund democrats. You think the oil companies not getting 85 billion government hand outs are happy? You don’t know the industry.

This changes nothing. Exxon’s best year they made 3.5 billion pumping over 3 million a day. Do the math. It would take over 25 years to recover your investment. This is only if you could magically start pumping 3 million a day tomorrow and oil prices increased to $100. Now add in once the Republicans are gone the Democrats are not going to do this socialist command economy stuff. There is no stability in Venezuela. There are so many better options to invest in vs Venezuela.

I do know the industry. I work in the industry. Let's just say the people I work for were in that meeting last week. The oil CEOs are not jumping for joy at the opportunity.

NP. I believe you but find it disgusting that the people cower to Trump. If they formed a pack and pushed back, we could get rid of trump. Instead, they just sit there quietly while Americans are being shot in the face.

President bush and Rumsfeld said the same thing in 2002. “The oil will pay for the war”.

It turned out Saddam seeing the invasion was imminent decided to go out with a bang and burned down all the oil infrastructure as a final f u

These type of things are not things you should say out loud. Trump is out of range

Their oil also isn’t the best quality. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze after billions in investment

I’m not surprised that Trump had no idea about the economics of Vz oil. But this action was planned by dozens of advisors and staff from the White House, State Department, and DOD who were smart enough to know it was a waste of money. And nobody said anything. This really is the Emperor’s New Clothes.
