No. My son didn't feel that he was overrun by politics, of either side, while attending (which was during both the 2021 and 2024 elections). There were a few professors who were considered very liberal and graded on hearing what they wanted to hear in that aspect. But that's just part of playing the school game. He was actually grateful to be at SLU when hearing about all the campus protests and violence at other, bigger schools last year.

Jesus Christ.

I'm an alum, albeit 30+ years ago. Absolutely loved my time there. They were the best years of my life. I was just back for a reunion in June, and the place is still amazing. The president had our class over to her house for cocktails and snacks, there was an amazing concert in the chapel, the usual parade, a sip and paint activity, and the usual social stuff at the Hoot Owl and Tick Tock. The campus looks amazing, with tons of improvements and renovations since I was there. They also have a robust study abroad program. I was fortunate enough to study for a semester in Kenya, and it was truly life-changing. The alumni network is consistently ranked as one of the highest. Hard to explain, but there is definitely a unique connection among alums. But yes, you need to be okay with cold weather and snow. I remember when the temperature would reach 50 in late April, everyone would be sitting outside in shorts playing frisbee and hacky sack.

I'd never heard of this school before, and I don't know anything about it beyond their website. Can anyone share experience or insight? I'm concerned it might be a bit too fratty for my kid (who is not fratty at all), but it's hard to tell. What kind of students are there?

Not as fratty as it used to be but VERY social. Cold and isolated-drink at the Hoot Owl and late night pizza roll at Sergi's.

Also a lot schools we looked at are in areas that are at best struggling. So maybe investigate and see if it makes sense?

The rep from what we have learned — a pretty tight alumni network. Outdoorsy kids. Relaxed and not intense. Strong school spirit. Not selective but that doesn’t mean kids don’t work hard or care. The kids don’t seem fratty? You may find something to like in their podcast.

Another DVM whiner about cold. It snows - go skiing, skating or hiking. Toughen up and buy a Subaru or Audi.

Where do you live? Have you been to the North Country? In January?

Do you not realize millions upon millions of people live in places with harsh winters? Humans have invented indoor heat, puffy jackets, hats and gloves... we travel in cars and SUVs nowadays, not on horseback, etc. Upstate NY is not the top of Mount Everest. You and/or your child will be perfectly fine in January if you are a normal person with a positive attitude.

+1. There is an entire country of people living perfectly happy lives north of North Country.

England represents an example of such a country.
'

England does not have the harsh weather of the NE of the USA. Absolutely no comparison. It doesn't even have the harsh weather of the DC area.

The only thing that is harsh in DC is the muggy summers. Winter here is a joke.

All of this woke nonsense is ridiculous. Just run along there is a useful conversation happening here.

Plenty of us want to know schools that are woke - so our kids are aware and can avoid such places and woke parents. Very helpful to know where DMV kids are going (and most importantly where they are not).

Actually yes - this all brings back a lot of memories. But I don’t live up there anymore so I also know this region and weather isn’t for everyone. Why pretend otherwise?

YOu said this earlier to another poster from the North Country. Nobody is pretending so just stop.

In terms of collegiate climate analogues, the average January low temperature for Carleton and St. Olaf is the same as that for St. Lawrence, at 5 °F.

Anonymous wrote:Some people love it but demographics show Americans are moving away from cold winters. And college is the three coldest quarters of the year.

Upside: those trends could mean demand isn’t as high as it could be?

Not really.

Yep, plenty of us. Stop barking up this tree. We all know you don't give two s**** about SLU or who goes there. You just want to argue.

I am curious as far as campus visits, I noticed they have options for a 1 hour tour and an option for an interview. No info session, which seems odd. For a junior who is visiting to see if he likes it, setting up an interview (which they say is evaluative) seems premature. Am I thinking about that right? I guess with no info session we just do the tour and that’s it?
