But now that Seaton etc have IB rights there, isn't it the same kids being counted as IB when they were OOB last year? |
No, because this data is for last school year, not this one. |
Can you link to the data that you're looking at? |
Scroll to the bottom for an .xlsx spreadsheet: https://edscape.dc.gov/page/enrollments-dcps-boundary-00 |
| Remember that all this IB participation data is affected by boundary changes. There weren't a lot of boundary changes in the last review, but in the 2014 cycle there were, and it caused students who once counted as IB to become OOB, and vice versa, even as their school and their home address didn't change at all. And there's a follow-on effect from siblings that lasts for years. Example: If a kid living in Bloomingdale started PK3 at Seaton in 2013, they would have been IB, but then become OOB when the boundary change happened. But they'd still be attending and conferring sibling status on their younger siblings who are also OOB. If the boundary change hadn't happened, all of those kids would have been IB. |
Yes, consistent with my prior belief, this data shows L-T has a IB participation rate of 61.2%, while Brent has 72.1%, so 10% and 20% more than Watkins (at the correctly described 52.1%). That's why I was confused... Also, both L-T and Brent (even more so) get affected by ECE kids who don't get in and therefore *can't* (as opposed to choose not to) participate; Peabody/Watkins increasingly does not have this phenomenon. |
Also, the Peabody/Watkins data is VERY off. It says only 267 kids live IB for Watkins, which is orders of magnitude too low (100 less than Brent and 200 less than L-T??? No chance. Look at the relative sizes of the zones in what is basically the same neighborhood). |
| Which school is "UMC" or what does UMC mean? |
It means "upper middle class". |
People in Petworth have been hoping MacFarland will improve for decades. It will never actually gain momentum due to it feeding to Roosevelt. |
Yes studies have proven that immersion kids are behind in ELA in elementary because they are getting 50% less ELA but later catch up and even surpass non-immersion kids. |
+100 Sorry to say this. I’ve lived in Takoma/Brightwood/16th st heights for over 15 years. Almost none of the schools people have gotten excited about in that time have remained on an upward trajectory. Powell? Bruce-Monroe? Takoma? EL Haynes? Nope nope nope. Whittier and Wells have boosters on here, but they are still woefully behind wotp schools. |
It’s anecdotal but Takoma seems to be on the upswing. Based on who we talk to in the area, parents sending in boundary there (or Whittier) instead of feeling real pressure for charter. Almost our entire neighborhood goes to Takoma as their IB. |
I would not say that. We know families in Takoma who are in immersion charters. It’s a no brainer because DCI is right there - a charter neighborhood middle/high school that your kid could walk or bike to school. |

On the MacFarland post: I wrote that MacFarland will be like Powell, Bruce
Monroe and Bancroft. SOME white kids. Not a Ward 3 school. |
