| I like the taste of wine, and the idea of it, but I am probably the lightest of all lightweights - I get flushed and light-headed after half a glass of red, or 2/3 of a glass of white. So I rarely order in a restaurant - just sip occasionally from DH's glass. And he never has more than one. At home we sometimes open a bottle of wine with Sunday dinner but between my half glass and only slightly more for DH, it takes us a full week to go thru the bottle. Often we forget about it entirely because we don't think to drink it during the work week. So I drink somewhat frequently - probably three or four times a month - but it is only a couple ounces at a time. I have never been drunk and never will, because I like the taste, but I have a built-in stopping point. I'm told some people like the light-headed feeling and that it makes them feel relaxed, but I have the opposite reaction. DH thinks I have some sort of enzyme deficiency or something that prevents me from metabolizing the wine properly. Who knows. |
| PP, you must be Asian. |
It's called Asian flush, from an enzyme deficiency. Many people of Asian descent have this. It can even raise esophogeal cancer rates if you're a heavy drinker. See http://www.nih.gov/news/health/mar2009/niaaa-23.htm |
Nope. DH jokes that I get the "Asian flush," but my ancestry is 100% Eastern European. Who are not exactly known for their lack of drinking skills! |
I get the redness too, and I'm not Asian. All I drink is wine and I think I may be allergic to sulfites. So I'm going to cut out wine. And I hope if anyone asks me why I don't drink I can be more gracious than getting angry and asking them if they've ever had an abortion! |
