He was super duper into Native American culture and collected Indian art for decades. He really tried hard to balance the development of Sundance with the respect of the land it was on. He was not perfect but he was real. He was someone who had a humbleness and spirit and it made him refined. You don't get that combo too often in anyone. He appreciated everything - his Oscar was where he displayed a plastic thing he brought off the side of the road next to a piece of Indian art as well - all things he loved and it didn't matter from where they came. A lot of people aren't this genuine.
What I loved so much about him is not only that he great at what he did - movie star - but as a human being. He tried to live well and many of us can take a lesson from that. Well in not just comfort and ethically but in appreciating his success, in kindness and in his limits. He went through tragedy and how he acted through those tragedies reflect his character. Most people aren't lucky enough to go in their sleep. He really deserved that gift ![]() |
