DHMS Theater Program

The drama teacher split between Hamm and Gunston is indeed currently teaching classes at Gunston (at least Drama as part of the 6th grade wheel). I believe, therefore, that the leave in question has not yet started but will occur in the Spring when the play usually occurs. If DHMS does not have an adequate long-term sub covering the drama classes (maybe she is still teaching the wheel at DHMS, just not drama classes), I learned that Educational Theatre Company (ETC) often sends its teaching artists as long-term subs. For GMS, I am awaiting a response from our principal about the plan (the email copied in an above post was from APS's supervisor of arts education not from Gunston's principal).

At DHMS there are no drama classes on the wheel this year.

Do you have a child in the class? I have heard otherwise.

Has anyone heard any updates regarding this? I saw Gunston is still hiring for the position

How’s that?

Teacher is out on leave. They can replace as the position is protected legally.

What more do you want to know?

What they are not being transparent about is reducing the drama positions down to half time and therefore eliminating after school theater as an option for kids.

It was reduced to half time due to enrollment.

Due to enrollment? But there is no enrollment! …the plays and musicals are put on via auditions, after school, but such an important part of the school. That answer was a cop out.

However, if drama was reduced to half time positions by APS’ central office they have been hiding this! I had no idea Hamm and Gunston (and Swanson?) had no theatre productions this year! What a shame!

Hamm has a theatre production this year.

That's wonderful. I hope Swanson can make it happen without their beloved auditorium.

Swanson has a (great) drama teacher but can’t use the auditorium right now. The theater class is doing their play this month at Cardinal, which is not ideal. The musical, open to all and quite popular, will be later this year, back at Swanson I believe.
