Watkins Mill did not, don't know about Gaithersburg.

I was at Gaithersburg High School this evening and saw girls with field hockey sticks so I am going to assume they got enough to field a team.

I’d suggest a game against Paint Branch or Sherwood - you want to see a really competitive game so he’s getting a lot of play time. And get your tickets early. They sellout fast.

Good news! I heard 2-3 schools won’t be able to field a team this year.

I’m glad Gaithersburg was able to pull together a team. I wish them the best of luck this year.

Too bad about Watkins Mills. What other schools weren’t able to get enough players for a team?

A handful of Varsity football teams had their first scrimmages this week. I know Seneca Valley played St Johns Catholic Prep from Frederick and lost 14-0 and Paint Branch was blown out by Gonzaga in DC.

Not an athletics question that applies to this year but I was discussing with a friend of mine about whether or not Crown and Woodward were going to offer Varsity sports upon opening. They will only have 9th and 10th graders in the first year and won't have a full school for two more years after that.

I cannot imagine they would allow these schools to field football teams full of 14 year old freshmen to play against teams much older than them for obvious safety concerns. I also cannot imagine that MCPS, after spending so much time and effort on the boundary study, would grant COSA applications to kids simply so they can play sports at their former school district.

It will be very interesting to see how these schools approach this

Seems like Gaithersburg HS lost a senior leader from the football program as Barry Ituka transferred to Loudon Sports Academy in Leesburg, VA. Tough break for a team that can't afford to lose talent

If Crown and Woodward only open with 9th and 10th grade students, they will likely only field JV teams for the sports that offer both JV and Varsity. For the sports that do not have a JV option, they will have Varsity teams (such as Cross Country, Swim/Dive, Boys/Coed Volleyball, Track & Field, Tennis, etc). Wrestling will probably have a Varsity team as well, since it is by weight classes.

Travon Jackson and De'lonzo Hinnant from Quince Orchard also went to play at Loudon Sports Academy

Our Flag Football team had 50 try out for 21 spots. I never thought it would take off quite this fast!
