He sent another email to the prof a couple of months ago (I didn't know), but he never checked his email again for whatever reason I don't know. Today he requested a transcript from the school to apply for an internship, and found the professor changed the grade from F to C! He seems much relieved but is still not happy, probably because of his ADHD brain he is always a perfectionist, but it's so much better than an F. All this time he didn't have to suffer and worry. Thanks anyway to everyone here for your input. I'll definitely encourage him to communicate better with his professors and advisors going forward.

That's nice but OMG never checked his email again...for months?
This bodes poorly for future without some planning and checklists.
And ffs thank the professor.

Maybe he was trying to avoid the triggers for mental health.

Agree with this poster. Hard to get even a B at “prestigious” institutions, since that would be an admission that an acceptance error was committed.

Can happen at any quality institution for a variety of reasons. Did DC have unexcused absences that triggers the F? Did they fail to turn in an assignment on time or at all?

Retake course and demonstrate commitment to pass. Yes an F will drop the GPA but can be overcome.

This sadly is the issue with limited or unlimited retakes of exams, lowest grade of 50%, etc., common in most high schools today. Kids coast through HS and think they can do the same in college, but at quality universities get a wake up call about what life is like in the real world.

Take class agin if offered in summer. Buckle down and get a B or better, may impact getting into top vet schools but will not be shut out by one mistake, if they learn from it.

My kid is at a T30 private university and has several B minuses, and I know they attended class and tried - they very much struggled first year adjustment to college format and expectations. Like a PP said, DC could have been better about meeting with the professor earlier on in the semester, but some classes only have a midterm and final and the profs don’t hand back midterm grades until about 2/3rds of the way into the semester, so it doesn’t give struggling kids a lot of time to recover.

Then kid needs to be aware of need to delegate especially since he reached out.

Don’t listen to this poster. That’s great news and is no reflection on the future. I’m one of the posters who failed a class in college. Around the same time, I stopped showing up to my part time job because I didn’t want to work there anymore. I was not having mental health issues and didn’t quit or tell them. I was immature and irresponsible. It had no reflection on the person I am today as an adult. I remind DH this when we are frustrated with our own kids. He did his own share of things then that he wouldn’t do now too.

Why are you micromanaging this? My kid failed a class and was rightfully worried about its effect on his scholarship and GPA, so he spoke with a counselor on his own and made a plan to tackle it.
