There are some schools that will make it work for everyone they want. And Yale is one of them. We - middle class - gave our kids a list of these schools. And they both now attend T20 schools that cost less than State U.

To use an example, Harvard tuition is free for those under $200,000 annual income. You just need to get into these schools. But the aid is there for all students they want.

+1. The problem is most people on DCUM don’t have an HHI of under $200k.

Yes, with mortgage and rent costing at least 7-10k/month these schools make rules that apparently you should displace your family and move to West Virginia

+1 I think that's why people are shocked. Families making $300k are full pay at Ivies. So seeing somebody pay $14k in this area vs the $90k is incredulous.

Unless you have the $15-20K saved for any of the others and can help with law school. But yes, I'd be tempted to take the full ride, just make certain the requirements to keep the "full ride". If your kid needs a 3.0, great. If they need a 3.75+, then choose one where the Req to keep the funding is easy to maintain.

Harvard or Yale, who both fill a big chunk of their law school class with their own students, and from the other.

I would never skip Harvard for Duke. The Harvard of the South? Accept no substitutes.

Why do you have to be snarky? I think that is generally accepted but the passive aggressiveness is not necessary. Where did you go to school? I love all of these so called experts with their degrees from multi-directional flyover state U.

By the way, I know plenty of donut hole people who got AB Duke's and the like to Duke vs. full pay at HYP and chose Duke. Based on this poster's scenario, I agree that choosing Duke is likely not the best move, but if the student is much happier there, it isn't an awful decision.

Opinions are like belly buttons - everyone has one...

Sorry I hurt your feelings. You can wipe away your tears with your Tier 4 degree written on toilet paper as you act like an expert.

This place is such a cesspool.

I cannot believe there are people saying Vanderbilt here. Harvard and Yale are the obvious choices, and even if they attend fully on debt at this tuition cost it is just obviously worth it. Vanderbilt is a good school, no doubt. Harvard is the strongest academic brand in the world and the opportunities it provides are in a class of its own. I cannot emphasize enough that it would be erroneous to choose a relatively small discount for this opportunity.

Unless you can really not afford $14k a year (cheaper than daycare!) I'd go with Yale.

I think students at Vandy and Duke are happier, which matters for spending four years of your life there.

Duke is not that great in law and in general, Vandy is better but Ivy is of course way better. Harvard for the name recognition or Yale for a great undergrad. Which ever is more important.

If Stem, Harvard. If humanities, Yale maybe. Can’t drop the “H” bomb if you go to Y.

Definitely Yale

Harvard or Yale. Do the visits. A lot of kids pick Yale after bulldog days and visitas, especially if pre-law. For medicine or stem, Harvard would be hard to turn down.
