William & Mary and Tulane Choice

They live in California I figured that was probably a given they haven't

OP said in one post that at least the WM visit was set for this month. Honestly, if someone had actually visited both and done th tour and seen the kids, ai think the differences would be pretty apparent.

Visit to W&M for accepted students day will make the decision easy. You feel the sense of belonging or you don’t.

Best of luck with the decision! I agree with others that W&M seems like a great fit for your student. My husband studied economics there and knew a lot of business majors. All really bright and successful people with a range of careers in government, private sector, etc. It’s a school where different students can find their “tribe” and fit in (some go Greek or are athletes, some like to party, others are more reserved and studious, lots are somewhere in between).

William & Mary - my DC is a W&M grad who sounds a lot like your kid, and really enjoyed their time there. They now go to grad school in California, and people there have heard of and respect the school (since you mentioned prestige).

Also, I think these things are silly, but, if it matters to your kid “prestigue” wise, W&M is on Forbes list of “New Ivys” this year. I think Tulane is as well?

Tulane has a better Econ dept. W&M barely ranks in ECON on real faculty publishing rankings:

We had this choice among others and kid not choosing Tulane because one of the worst families in DC has a daughter attending there and the entire family - yes mom too engages in bullying behavior. The mom is already trying to get her daughter into the top sorority there.

So many colleges out there and a kid can only attend one. If I could have attended two colleges, William and Mary would have been one of them.

66 percent of William and Mary students are from Virginia. 14 percent of Tulane students are from Louisiana.

Yeah but there is a big chunk from the south. You have to be okay with that.

NP. I would consider that a huge plus.

William and Mary didn’t feel very Southern when we were there for its admitted student weekend last year (we’re from the Deep South). It felt more metro-DC/Northeastern.

He’s laid-back and a bit introverted but really enjoys hanging out with friends. Not into Greek life or drinking (though we know that could change). He’s a diligent student who prefers to get the work done and then enjoy life. Bright (1570 SAT, etc.) and is looking for a community of similarly smart, kind kids with an active social scene. Likely leaning toward Econ, though he’s not fully decided. He does have a bit of a prestige hang-up, but he’s starting to come to terms with that after seeing how brutal admissions can be.

He was pretty heartbroken to be waitlisted at Notre Dame and Georgetown but was happy to be accepted to both W&M and Tulane in regular decision. Both schools clearly attract smart kids.

We’d love any insight on how these two compare in terms of academic culture, student body, and social life for someone like DS. Thank you.

So applied to both and just now inquiring?

Great Tripp. Why don’t you go cracker it up on the course?

It is not very Southern at all. Maybe for a CA person but not really and nothing like New Orleans.
