Schools and Education General Discussion
|
To me the saddest state of play, is the level of independence and problem solving skills that our children are losing this generation. I've heard that teachers feel they can see a drop almost each year. I see it in very well educated young adult professionals that I teach and lead. While this is usually attributed to the change in society and related to that - parenting styles, but school also probably plays a part.

It sure is different! When I went to high school 20 years ago...
I didn't get a "cheat sheet" to help me remember my formulas. I didn't have free after school tutoring to help me succeed...oh and with dinner provided. I didn't have a reading specialist work with me to better understand the complexities of a textbook. I didn't have all my assignments listed on a website...just in case I forgot to write them down. I didn't have an extra set of textbooks for home...just in case I left one at school. I didn't have parents who listened to my side of the story when I did something inappropriate, and blamed my teachers for my behavior. I didn't have a guidance counselor who sat with me through the whole college admissions process, and even mailed my college apps. I didn't have special bus transportation to get me home if I stayed late for extra FREE tutoring. As far as I am concerned, kids have it super easy. |
Where is this school? My ds is at churchill and i'm pretty sure he doesn't have access to any of the above, although he could definitely use it. |
| It is a high school in Loudoun County. |
I had to walk mile to school. In the snow! Now I see the parents driving the kids up to the bus stop, even if they live only half block away, and they sit uin the car till the bus arrives. |
| Curious what the parents were like when they were in school. Were you a slacker so you want to make up for it with DC? Or are you continuing a tradition that you were brought up with? |
