Happier After Move Away from FCPS/Fairfax County?

Schools out in rural areas have a lot of drugs and teen pregnancy. Plus the standards are lower, so less chance of going to college.

Counter point: rural schools generally have less gangs. And if you are motivated it’s easier to get into a good college from a rural school than Fairfax.

I’ll sum it up:

Big fish, small pond.

More opportunities to play sports or gain admission to preferred college.

But you will be less prepared for the rigors of the good college that you got into.

Gentleman’s B+ from a good school will get you pretty far in life.

Not anymore. Well, unless you have gentleman's connections...

An annoyed liberal who owns an eraser deletes comments she doesn't like, but keeps bigoted comments about a school being a 97% White.

I bet she has that "Hater has no home" yard sign in front of her house, for sure.

Now they have Christmas music performances and watch Jesus films. (They don’t even attend church…yet) They have to take agriculture classes. And their schools are 97% white.

I’ll take FCPS any day.

They either have their kids in a private school or consciously chose to live in a "white" area. Most public schools in Alabama are not 97% white.

OP, I have to say that I’m confused by a complaint about bureaucracy without mention of your kids and their actual schools.

Is the former causing problems for the latter, or is this a case of what you’re choosing to focus on?

We effed of to Goochland County. Stunning house, great neighbors, reasonable priced and strong private schools.

Had to get away from druggy, chaotic, and decaying public schools. Sad to see the educational crown jewel of the Commonwealth in such decline but maybe some miracle will take place.

I don’t believe you. If anything, I’m sure it’s gotten easier.

They have friends now, too. They started to smile again after we left FCPS, which was very hard on them. The bullying, the social and financial stratification (rich kids vs. poor kids), the overcrowded classrooms, etc. FCPS is coasting on fumes from the 1990s. It isn't that anymore.

Don't buy into the FCPS hype. There are dozens of HS between Richmond and Hampton Roads that can go toe to toe with your typical above average FCPS HS. If you are not tied to a job keeping you locked down to NoVA then you can get a better house in a HS that won’t change its boundary, and your kid will oftentimes have a better outcome for college admissions. Yes, it is true your kid will feel a little more shock from college academic rigor depending on the school, but it’s easy to overcome. Source: attended a rural high school and graduated from UVa with tons of TJ students, have met many FCPS students who had better HS bona fides and went on to JMU, VT, VCU. Also I would argue I had a much better high school quality of life/mental health outcome compared to your average FCPS student.

There are a lot of drugs in FCPS, even the "good" schools.

To think otherwise is delusional.

Agree.

Alabama schools have way more AA students than any northern Virginia school.

That other poster is just making up things.
