An instructional day for K, but a day off for the other grades? |
So now one day of transition is going to make the whole school year better but the entire first week of transition doesn’t do that??? Why not just give K a separate school. |
Most of the K teachers I know are not advocating for a Spring orientation because it makes transition easier but because it makes planning and class assignment easier. In that they can observe the students and make some initial assessments. They acknowledge they will still need to review the kids again in the first weeks of school because many months will have passed. But any known special needs or suspected special needs, that knowledge helps, as does the ability to balance personalities. |
The ones I know absolutely acknowledge it is helpful for transitions. But the above is yet another great reason for a spring orientation. |
Why do you post about things you know nothing about? |
That' would actually be perfect because then K can have a day off for the next year's K spring orientation. MCPS would never do such a thing though. It makes far, far too much sense. |
Or because they have to balance in what families would say about this. Like families with both K students and 3rd graders. Or K students and 7th graders. |

I mentioned this to my HS student and they said, “So we’re supposed to do multiple pep rallies, student panels, and early mornings on the first week of school? Yeah, no. I’ma be off on that Monday.” Can’t wait to hear in the spring and summer what our HS has planned for this. |
Dana and her team are absolute morons for not seeing this as an issue. |
The part the really stands out for me is in this article is where it notes " Superintendent Thomas Taylor noted the transition day was his idea; he’d incorporated such a day into academic calendars when he worked for other districts. Taylor said providing transportation creates more equity for students who may not have a way to get to their schools for other orientation events." Did Taylor not understand or consider that MCPS already had something in place that was working for many, including already providing transportation. Did the group just not consider how they could enhance what was already there? I'm with the SMOB in wanting to know which secondary schools were/were not already doing the Thursday transition day. Is there anywhere we can view the results of the initial community feedback about the transition day? |
The 7th grader can stay home by themselves or babysit the 3rd grader. But MCPS can't prioritize kids. |
In the scenarios it was a K & 3rd grader. No one is staying home by themself. In the second scenario the 7th grader would be at school in the Spring. |
Whoosh |
Maybe he correctly saw the current system isn't working well for many people. Leaving it up to individual schools to decide whether to do the right thing is not what is best for kids. |
Then just mandate it for the Thursday that everyone else was already doing it on. Problem solved. |
