Look for personalized etched glass drink ware. I gave a set of two drinking glasses with a picture their dog breed. Or if they have a hobby or a beach house, you can find something. My son and his grandfather play pool together so we got Grandpa a set of pint glasses with 8 balls etched on them . Etsy has tons of options.

They aren’t destitute, and giving cash or gift cards is not appropriate. But I want to give things that are genuinely useful. In the past I’ve done fleeces, water bottles, calendars, etc. I don’t know them well enough to know exactly what they might need at a given moment. A few have dietary restrictions so I’m looking for some non-food gifts. Any good, general ideas? I spend about $50 per person or $100 per couple. Appreciate any suggestions!

The best buy ever: heated mattress pad. My feet are never cold and there are dual controls and I can be as warm as I want.

OP, please do not buy this for a woman in peri/menopause, lol.

Exactly what I was thinking! I'd prefer something that would make my bed a constant cool temperature like the ground deep within a cave.

I love these. I use them for groceries, for packing things to bring to family gatherings and parties, packing to go to the family lake house, for incidentals to have in the back seat on a road trip (snacks, DVDs, water bottles, books etc). Love them.

I think the cell phone charging banks are great—so useful. Maybe even the solar ones for people who live in places that lose power a lot—my kid has those and keeps it fully charged always.

Agree nice socks especially for the active younger folks, like darn tough.

Those baggu bags or similar that fold up very small and are washable are incredibly useful.

Nice gloves. Take up little space and everyone can use. Agree decent umbrellas also incredibly useful. Could pair with some nice tea and snacks as a Rainey day kit.

For someone with neck pain or menstrual cramps these are great, although I wish they made them without the lavender scent:

On the go phone charger, or a goal zero they can charge up and take camping or use when the power is off to charge electronics.

I do, for condolences. What do you send? An "I'm sorry your mom died" email?

I’m the pp who said that. My grandparents in their 80s or 90s send birthday cards to their dozens of grandchildren and kids. And both my parents and I laws send cards to my little children on all holiday. Kids go crazy for holiday cards!
