Save on burn out, spreads out breaks for parents. Rec centers can still staff up with employees & highschool students if needed

DC tried that with a pilot program for a handful of low-income schools. It didn't work, and in fact made things worse.

I think this would only work if all DCPS and charter schools in dc followed this calendar. Otherwise there’s no point and kids just won’t come to school in the summer.

This calendar really does nothing to address the fact that child care availability is severely lacking by 2nd week of August. In the initial proposal earlier this year, I wanted the kid to have two full weeks of schooling in August.
Camps need to be extended an extra week they end too early.

Wow, they did not publicize this at all.

Starting after Labor Day caught my eye. I would prefer to have an early August start date. I do prefer spring break to stay in April.

They are just including that to prove a point.

Agreed. They are trying to make clear to the loud (but I think small) subset of people who think school should start after Labor Day what that would actually mean for the end of the year.

Other districts still manage to end in June and start in early September or very late August.

Those schools don’t do 180 instruction days + Election Day + 10 PD + shutting down school for 2 full days for RK/PTC.

My sister’s kids in rural’ish NC only do like 170 days. And that includes like 2.5 weeks off for Christmas. They start same date as DCPS and are always done around June 2/3/4. And they get an extra day off for spring break week.

180 days is required by law

Wonder if that will change.. due to federal funding cuts. If DC has to make up money paying for teachers, buildings being open and all the support staff a couple less weeks might save them come money.

I’m the opposite. I think they should start summer break at July 4 long weekend and return after Labor Day.

NP and I’d much rather have June off and have kids back early August. It makes more sense for all testing (CAPE and AP) and June is a much more pleasant month to be outside. August is hot and humid.

Yes, that's why people take vacations in August.

Lots of people can’t afford to take vacations in August.

#1 Move spring break back to April.
#2 Reduce PD calendar dates from 12 to 10
(including the 4 0.5 days).
#3 Make President's Day a 6-day weekend (Thursday-Tuesday) if a full Monday-Friday week off can't be done.
#4 Use 1 PD day on election day.

For that 3rd year only (28-29) the school year starts on August 14 for teachers and 21 for students a full week before 23-24 which was similar and that school year still ended before Juneteenth. The start should be moved back to August 21 for teachers and 28 for students like it was in 2023-24.

They should just get rid of the useless PD days. They are a bogus a waste of time imo and just an excuse to create projects for central office to work on.

The half days are days with no students, they are half days for the teachers and will not impact students. They will not make school on those days regardless.

Yeah, I really, really doubt they'll bring back half-days for students, which can be hugely disruptive for parents. I'm pretty sure half-days got an overwhelmingly negative reaction the previous time DCPS asked for calendar feedback, which is why we don't see them anymore (there used to be a lot of them).

Half days are terrible because parents still need to do drop off/pickup + work commute, but for only 3.5 hours of school.

I said for PD to be reduced from 12 to 10 calendar dates INCLUDING 4 0.5 PD days so there would be 8.0 PD on 10 days instead of 10.0 on 12 days.
I did NOT say anything about student half days.
