Why is Maryland such a blue state?

Made the mistake of driving through King George and was inundated with confederate flags up and down the roads. Maryland only seems to have that demographic in parts of the Eastern Shore and Garrett County, which isn't enough to substantially move the needle.

There are some trumpers in Mont. and Howard counties. The tell is that they say, "I wish we had better choices [of candidates]."

I don't need a tell. I will be voting for Trump for the third time next week - your neighbor

You don't need a tell because you wear a t shirt with an arrow pointing down, which reads "trump can grab me here."

Yes. In case you didn't know, OP, education has become the biggest predictor of political leaning ever since 2016, and Maryland is highly educated.

Democratic also doesn't mean Socialist and Communist, despite what some MAGAs will have you believe. Marylanders were pretty happy with two-term Governor Hogan! MD is really full of centrists, who vote Democrat because they are intelligent enough to see what Republicans as a mob, do to other States, in Congress and in the White House. They are part of the national bulwark against widening economic inequalities and eroding human rights. Those are long-term visions for the country as a whole, and not a mere short-sighted pocketbook concern.

Maryland's demographics IMHO point more center-right:

- Very conservative western MD, Eastern shore, southern MD
- Baltimore county suburbs very culturally conservatives, especially the old-timey, "hon," "crabs and Old Bay," Americana type culture
- Socially conservative Black population
- Fiscally conservative new immigrant wealth in places like Potomac
- Religious conservative Latino immigrants
- Pro-Israel Jews
- pro-Business Howard County
- wealthy retirees in Calvert County
- Annapolis isn't very progressive either, lots of wealthy lawyers with yachts

So who is driving Maryland so heavily to the left?

The overwhelmingly majority of black people vote for Democrats, socially conservative or not. Maryland is the 5th blackest state, even counting DC. Add in enough liberal white voters, unlike the other very black states like Mississippi, and you've got a solidly Democrat state.

Bingo.
