Simple dinner party meal

Anonymous
Some of the comments lead me to believe many hosts aren’t checking about allergies or aversions. This seems like a first step in planning a meal for a group. So many dishes are easy to modify or to offer with options. For example, chicken shawarma + cauliflower and red peppers shawarma, or regular noodles + squash or zucchini pastas w/ meatballs served separately from marinara sauce (or take some marinara out before dropping the meatballs in the sauce. Some of my small group events include some really complicated eaters such as a vegetarian who can’t eat most vegetables. Last time I hosted his family, I made a Spanish tortilla with several accompaniments that people could pick and choose from. Another time I made crepes with several filling options.

You're right. Absolutely nobody asks the guest list about allergies or preferences. You are really onto something

Spaghetti with meatballs on the side. Salad, garlic toast.

Dessert is brownies with ice cream cheesecake or key lime pie.

The bolded I think is true (at least when you are choosing the people, and not sort of thrown together by having kids at the same school, or something). We literally don’t have a single vegetarian in our group. It’s stereotypical, but the men are all very into meat and their grills and smokers. This is not to say that no vegetarian meals are ever served, but to have a completely vegetarian menu for a dinner party would be a very odd thing.

Too much cream and too much dairy.

You the one that is always suggesting Indian food for every event?

I am vegetarian. Most of my circle of friends are not. I am also lactose intolerant but not vegan.

I do not require any special accommodations. I will eat sides, salads, veggie dip, bread, fruit. I always leave full and don’t require anything from my host. I will make do.

I start by asking about dietary restrictions and go from there.

Too much cream and too much dairy FOR YOU. Why is it so hard for people on here to be polite and understand that their preferences and dietary restrictions do not apply to everyone? You can give this feedback but phrase it decently “too much cream/dairy in this menu for me.”

There’s 3 items in a 9 item menu with cream in it. Why wouldn’t you just pick the nondairy items to eat?

Also, do you track people who always suggest Italian food or just Indian for some reason?

It is a standard for a reason. I also travel a ton and entertain a ton. It is always great to have a lasagna in the freezer.

+1

I see that make-your-own-taco bar thing posted all the damn time, and I don't want to eat it at someone's house and I'm definitely not serving it.

Then stay home, please.

I am so glad my circle is filled with people who get that building community is the point and don’t GAF what’s on the menu.

OP, you’ve got the right idea and some good suggestions from people who actually bothered to post any. Have fun!

I would happily eat lasagna, salad and brownies anytime. And 1992 was a good year.
