How does it compare in those circles to northwestern Michigan or Cornell? |
| I think the idea of “elite” colleges is asinine, but I went to Princeton, so that’s easy for me to say, which is precisely why I went into debt to choose Princeton. |
| Andy beshear is an alum! But back then was easy to get in |
Elite publics? Nice try. |
How would I or my kid know this? He just reports what interviewers say during the icebreaker part of the interview. Oh, great school. How do you like Nashville? I Have you taken any classes from Prof. ABC (in poli sci) ? |
Michigan is below Georgetown and Emory in prestige. It's 1.HYPSM 2.Columbia, Duke, Upenn, Caltech, UChicago 3.Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins 4.Vandy, Rice, Notre Dame, Emory, Washu, UCB, Georgetown 5. Umich, UCLA, CMU, USC, UCLA, UNC |

You people are nuts.
Love, vandy alum who knows better than to obsess about minute gradations of supposed prestige for undergrads. |
Highly accurate ranking ! All five groups are prestigious; Groups 1-3 are what most people mean by "Elite". |
Is Vandy “easier” than schools in groups 1-3? Easier grading etc? |
Definitely not. In fact, it’s known to have grade deflation, especially in relationship to the lower ivies. |
I don't think so. The kids are not the same. I really doubt much overlap. Tufts would get the nod over BU. Likely more diverse but so what? |
Which schools in group 4 can move to group 3? |
I think Vandy, Rice and Emory. There is the right part of the country, in big cities, and have big financial resources. Notre Dame has the money but doesn't have the location and grad school infrastructure. |
