Too many screens in schools? No textbooks?

I have two older kids (HS) and one younger (elementary)
Younger started K during covid so we enrolled at a private so he could attend in person. Best decision we ever made. His private is nearly screen free and I'm thrilled about it.

I think big tech education lobbyists to blame in-part.

I teach public preschool (PEP @ mcps) -

So much content is just thrown op on a big screen.

Why are 3& 4 year-olds not in a circle singling along to yukalale? Why are books not read aloud? Why can’t today’s weather “man” go to the felt board & dress the bear appropriately rather than sliding hand across a screen.

It’s bad! Kids need tactile experiences. And the PEP kids - often need to be taught imaginary play because home life is lacking that.

FCPS teacher here. The new basal will help with limiting technology. The kids will still need to do Lexia and take assessments online but I plan to not use tech at all during my LA block with the exception of research or the unit assessments.

Math I use tech occasionally but mostly it is paper/pencil and most of my coworkers are the same.

I am hoping to be very purposeful this year with tech.

Because they've been looking at screens all of their lives? It really does change brains.
