Umm. Maybe it was your kid? One-dimensional? Bad interviewer? Boring and uninspiring?
My kid with 33 ACT and 3.8uw is going to Ivy.

Let ppl tour what they want. No one made you God.

Feel free to waste your time. Just passing on what post people seem to need to learn the hard way. Its hard to get in. No need to get nasty.

Different poster here. Why come in to any Ivy post to talk about your kid who didn't get in 2 years ago? Clearly many kids DID get in and therefore it isn't crazy for the next crop of kids to visit the school(s).
You post your kid's stats constantly and it's been 18 months since he/she was rejected. It's really time to move on with life.

If the kid is as annoying as the parent, then there's the answer. No one needs that around. Everyone tries to avoid PITA kids and parents.

NP. Why are people piling on this parent? Because you think she's harshing your Ivy buzz? Maybe she came on a bit strong, but her caution is helpful. Very few will get into Ivies. Hope people are putting as much focus on touring likelies and targets.

How old are you? Is this an experience from this century? I went to Penn in the 80s, and your description isn't accurate even for Penn 40 years ago! Definitely not accurate now.

DP. Late last century (1998), I visited Wharton to look at the MBA program. Campus felt somewhat unsafe. I noticed mirrors had specifically been set up in the basement ladies' room to look around corners and there was a hardwired safety alarm button in the sink and stall area. That was just one of many clues that it wasn't a campus where I would feel comfortable. Later that spring, a female MBA was horribly murdered by a stranger in her Center City apartment. It took years for the police to solve the crime.

https://people.com/crime/shannon-schieber-troy-graves-people-magazine-investigates/

I'm mentioning this because PP threw 40 years out. My experience is 25 years old but memory lasts a long time. I'm parent age now and what I hear is that Penn is much better but there's still a bit of a safety island effect and there is still rough stuff nearby. I personally am reasonably aware of urban safety but I also value not having to think about it. I went to a different non-Philly urban school for undergrad and found that I had to plan ahead a lot to avoid walking alone at night. As a short woman, the risk of being targeted is much more concerning.

So...you have a problem with every urban school in every city in the USA.

Also, your example is of a person murdered in Center City Philadelphia who was an MBA student at Penn...are you implying the dangers of the Penn campus followed her to Center City...because those are two different neighborhoods entirely.

PP. I didn't feel comfortable visiting the school itself. As I mentioned. Where grad students live was relevant to me at the time. And the police were not competent in expeditiously solving the crime. You are correct that crime risk is a consideration for urban schools. It is not the only consideration, but certainly is one. Do you represent that Philadelphia has more effective policing today than in the past?

Hey. The world has changed a lot since you sealed yourself inside your bubble 26 years ago. Philly is now one of the most dynamic cities in America. Penn long ago completed its project of buying up and redeveloping everything within miles of campus, including setting up incubators for the booming tech, bio, and pharma industries there.

Maybe you can be like Rumpelstilsken and actually visit now. A lot has changed while you've slept through life.

By the way, have you noticed what's changed in DC since 1998? I'm sure you were terrified to go to Tracks back then. But maybe you should check out Nats stadium that is just two blocks from all the places that would have scared you then.

Grow up.

Agree, it is good advice to cover all types of schools on tours. WE toured ivies and other reaches and also safeties, and it worked out. The reach/ivy tours helped a lot with essays and interviews. Yet, we know far more top-of -the class, top scores, great kids who did NOT get into ivies than those who did: anyone paying attention the last 4 yrs should know it is very competitive and hard to tell if your kid really is the one that will be picked by an ivy, especially if unhooked.

You're just as annoying. Stay in your own lane. Sounds like you don't want to tour ivies. GREAT! You do you.

Every parent knows that the Ivies are crap shoots. We don't need your "tsk, tsk" know-it-all, party-pooper attitude coming on here to tell us about it.

All true. But doesn't change that PP who keeps posting the stellar stats of their reject kid is not looking in the mirror. There is a reason for getting rejected everywhere with those stats. Like really . . .

OP, not to fret, we toured safeties and targets too. I think anyone applying to Ivies and the like are well aware of dismal odds.

As shown in thread, during the school year we did not observe things that some other posters did during summer session.

As for the high stats no ivies poster, the stats get you in the door, holistic admissions evaluating all the other pieces along with institutional priorities you’ll never know are what get you a seat at the table. Sharing stats is fairly meaningless in my opinion.

Lastly, sorry, Ivy tours are more interesting to me than xyz state school. Nothing wrong with them, went to one, just not as interested to read about others impressions.

We toured the ones easy accessible (we go north for summer vacay so could hit a few that way) and avoided the far ones like Dartmouth for tours.

Unhooked kid that got into two. The WL one we visited after WL on spring break so if kid got in he’d have already toured it.

We didn’t do many tours. The first time I saw my college was move-in day.

Was Penn one of the ivies where they found weapons and terrorist propaganda in the encampments? I do recall they had a lot of outside agitators and couldn't seem to get them to leave.

Different poster. I was there late 80s to early 90s and crime was indeed a major issue and classmates were mugged, one shot. It's not nearly as bad a north Philly, where Temple is, but West Philly has a lot of problems with crime.

Touched a nerve I guess. Not a party pooper, just a realist. Merely said I hoped people were focusing on targets and likelies as I've seen too many kids dazzled and disappointed. You make a lot of bogus judgments about me, while I said nothing judgemental about anyone. Pot calling the kettle black on "staying in your own lane."

DP. I agree with much of what you are saying, but why the insults? Are you the same poster as attacking other people? Why so grumpy?

Will add, Tracks referencetook me back. What's the issue with Tracks in 98? Did you mean 88? Thought it had all gentrified by the 90s. Seemed fine in 90 even. Miss that place. Good times.

DP. I think that is several different people on DCUM. The one on this thread said she only posted stats once, and I only saw one post like that here. Not sure why someone is trying to villify her. I guess because she is a Debbie Downer to them and it plays to their anxiety.

Yeah. I assume there was something really off with this kid.

You people are ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with this kid or the thousands of others like them that have a spotless application and don't get in. Feel free to live in your fantasy world.
