IB OA parent here with two lifer children. Comments like this reveal non-OA families’ ignorance about the school. Placing a non-Spanish speaking principal (Carrie) at OA is a non-starter. We’re very excited about Ms. Brito leading the school.

Please stay in your monolingual lane.

I think Carrie does speak Spanish actually but yes you need someone fully fluent and biliterate at OA.

Sorry, Spanglish doesn’t count.

Carrie is fluent in Spanish. I heard her having a full conversation in Spanish with a Latino parent at Lafayette last week. There’s some serious hate against Dr. Broquard that needs to stop. I would gladly send my little chickadee to any school being led by the phenomenal, exquisite, superb, splendid, and magnificent Dr. Broquard. She’s a true virtuoso and maverick of our time. The DC Standing Ovation award nominations are coming up and I will gladly be nominating Carrie Broquard.

Settle down, Carrie. Oyster-Adams doesn’t want you or your questionable “Spanish” language skills. Enjoy your time at Miner.

They are, but black children need role models who actually look like them and truly understands their culture and community. White principals come from outside of the neighborhood and don’t have a real connection to the community.

Name a DCPS principal who lives in “the neighborhood.” You could count it on one hand, if there are any.

Also if you really wanna get mad (sarcasm), if the AP at Amidon Bowen stays for next year, the two leaders will both be white men.

I’m pretty sure the PP who is all bothered by this has never set foot at Amidon or knows parents there.

You completely missed the point about white principals not have a connection to the community at a predominately black school. A middle class or upper middle class white man/woman does not understand the culture of the black community and does not have any significant cultural ties to the black community. Do you honestly believe that a white principal who commutes from NW, Montgomery County, Arlington County, Fairfax County understand the plight of black children who might be impoverished? Do you honestly believe that a white principal can relate to black parents better than a black principal? Do you honestly believe that a white principal who lives in a white community can’t put aside implicit racial bias when leading a predominately black school? The answer to all of these questions is NO.

So what about a black person who was raised middle class, rich, outside of DC or maybe outside of the US? Anyway, it's a done deal now and I hope all the principals are successful and stay a long time. Having a great principal is wonderful. But sometimes a good principal who stays 5-10 years is better than a great principal who stays 1-3 years.

Noted. I’m not Carrie Broquard but will tell her what you said next time I speak with her. This is rude for you to question her ability to speak Spanish. Carrie studied Spanish for years and it’s disrespectful for anyone to question it. Let’s get our act together people. Shape up or ship out.

Such a weird thing to lie about. She definitively does not speak Spanish or even Spanglish. Who is trying to rile up the Dr. B. people by posting all this ridiculous nonsense, what's the point?

The Powell’s principal is black and doesn’t speak Spanish. She’s been there for 8 years or more.

Powell is NOT Oyster-Adams.

Race is irrelevant here. Hispanics who are native Spanish speakers can be any race. As an O-A parent, I just want a good principal who is a native Spanish speaker.

Don’t hate honey. Carrie Broquard is that girl. She’s the principal that all of these others want to be. Keep hating! Carrie is going to laugh all the way to the bank.

What do you mean by that statement about Powell not being Oyster-Adams? I am trying to withhold judgement until I understand the intent of the comment.

Principal Eastman is a true professional and has been the calm, steady leader that Eaton really needed. He is a very talented and experienced principal and a wonderful kind-hearted person. Oh, and he is African American if that matters to DCUM. It doesnt matter to the Eaton community.

The terrible principal last year was white. Staff and families wrote no confidence letters to DCPS to have him removed. He was unfair, unkind, inconsiderate, inexperienced and incompetent. He was an awful principal.
Eaton is a diverse community, we welcome everyone. We just wanted a competent principal regardless of race.
Luckily, Principal Eatman found his way to our school.

Powell is not, and never has been on O-A’s level. This is a result of O-A’s:

1. Stated mission that at least 50% of the students come from native Spanish speaking homes;

2. Historical importance (O-A is nearly 50 years old and one of the oldest and best dual immersion public schools in the country). It is a national model for bilingual education;

3. Programming (introducing Mandarin as a 3rd language in 4th grade, Embassy partnerships, AP Spanish exam administered to 8th graders, student travel/exchange to Taiwan, Spain, and Costa Rica, etc); and

4. Test scores (self explanatory).

This list is not exhaustive. Just what came to mind quickly.

Most of the people on DCUM don’t believe that any black man is intelligent or competent enough to be principal.

A black person who is rich is highly u likely to work in education, let alone a demanding job like that of a school principal. However, a black person who was raised middle class is still black and has experienced what it is like to be black in America. Do you realize that race is recognized before tax bracket? Do you know how many blacks were harassed by police or accused of breaking into their own nice homes because they didn’t fit the “ profile” of someone who lives in such opulence? Black principals give black children HOPE. All schools have black custodians, black kitchen staff, but how many children get the opportunity to see a black leader? Many of their parents are in service roles on their jobs, and so often the only time some black children see a black person leading is at school.

What you mean is that O-A's population, including its Spanish speaking population, is largely wealthy and has the associated clout/power to demand a Spanish speaking principal. Also, it's a DCPS neighborhood school, which is at odds with its "stated mission that half the kids come from Spanish speaking homes." It manages that by restricting the IB kids it admits for PK4 and preferencing non-IB Spanish speakers instead.

No, I said what I mean. I don’t need an interpreter.

Those are your words and impressions. Not mine.
