HHI 250k—what’s your travel budget?

Anonymous
It’s tough to know what to spend if you don’t know people’s budget.

I know we have about $100,000 left after almost all expenses and taxes are paid. We have no mortgage, no car loans, no debt and the kids have to money for education.

I’m trying to get my husband to make a budget but he’s dragging his feet. He gets nervous with high cost items like expensive vacations. I think he’d be more comfortable if he transferred a set amount every month in a vacation account at the bank. I just dont know how much.

70 is a lot. Tell us more.

What do you want to know? We have taken them to most of Europe, most of Americas, lots of Middle East and North Africa, East Asia, plus Australia and NZ. So many great places in this world, we go whenever we can.

My daughter wants to go to Egypt. How did you like visiting this country.

PP here. Egypt is fantastic, but be ready for the hassle and chaos that comes with it. We used a mix of private guides and independent travel. It’s a very worthwhile trip, and you can easily add on a stop elsewhere in the region, say to Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Italy, all of which our family also has really enjoyed.

We are around $250k, and spend around 10-15k on travel. I would say the thing that helps us is drawing up a very specific monthly budget including monthly contribution to the travel fund (with a small margin for the unexpected) and then sticking to it, which requires analyzing monthly spending and then making adjustments. It’s a lot of work and we haven’t yet mastered it, but that’s how we make sure we are generally spending on things that are important to us and not blowing cash on things we don’t need.

We spend $5k or less per year w combined HHI $140k family of 5 with step kid. We do 1 trip and then a lot of weekend beach/lake (read free) drives. Most of our spending is on sport camps.

We are also about HHI 250K, and we spend about $15,000 a year on trips with family of 4. This seems to mean either one big trip (Europe, Hawaii, Caribbean, etc.) or two smaller trips like a beach week and a week to a domestic city or national park.

So we are not traveling over the holidays, spring break, and summer every year like a lot of people around here do. Saving for retirement and college, paying for travel sports and music lessons/orchestra/camps (which also limit our travel time), and spending money on home upkeep, etc. is important too. I like the balance we've struck.
