can someone help explain very rich, southern culture to me?

Sugary sweet with a big focus on outside appearances while hiding lots of skeletons in their closet.
And the whole, were Christian’s and don’t drink is BS. Check under the bed for some moonshine.
This is the stereotype and it is well deserved but my Yankee self met some strong, intelligent women who were very supportive of each other when I spent a short time raising kids in the Deep South. You know, the whole sir and ma’am thing can get judgey. Definitely had to educate myself on the culture so would not be considered damnyankees (it’s one word).

Haha!! I can’t believe how much time I just wasted, reading that entire thread. Thanks for posting.

I like the idea that OP is an author trying to do some lame crowd-sourcing research of southernisms so people will admire her for being “in the know”. I’m imagining that given how long her book is taking to write, she’s sweating that her descriptions are outdated in a post-athleisure-revolution world, where high-earning, respectable careers can be worked from a home office, “preppy” is synonymous with colorful, ill-fitting Nike, and everyone is obsessed with Florida. So she’s posted again here, hoping for any subtle 2024 updates.

On a possibly related note, would anyone be able to please post the Starbucks thread mentioned above? I tried searching for it but there are a shocking number of posts about Starbucks! I apparently haven’t wasted enough of my day today…

What happened at the Starbucks? No way I’m reading that thread but now curious.

Yeah, their ancestors were slaveholders and they're racist.

Watch Southern Charm! It is fun, and will give you some insight to Southern wealth and social norms.

My mother was old TN money, and what you're describing is accurate. My mother married a Yankee and I was born and raised in New England. The wealthy people up north are certainly different than the old south money circles.

I went to high school in the South with people like this. Lot of drinking and drugs, lots of partying around football that was intergenerational. Very high standard for looks for women with real impact, including rampant eating disorders and anxiety. Good help you if you don’t fit in or measure up, but always warm and gracious when entertaining. Good food always served too.

C'mon... no one actually considers the DMV area the South when referring to Southern culture. Being below the Mason-Dixon line is the only thing this area has in common with the South.

I grew up in NJ and the DMV is very much the South to me.

NP. Southern Charm was appalling. The debauchery that almost every guy engaged in was disgusting. Wasted drunkards with no morals, some masquerading as gentlemen. There is some damaged gene pool there.

There are so many Northern transplants that I'm not sure it's considered the South.

I have read no replies but Jfc op climb out of these people’s collective *sses and get a grip. If you are old enough to have a dating age child then you are old enough not to be starstruck by someone with several homes and a jacket. Grow up, put down the Arnold palmer, turn off days of our lives, turn on the ac and take quick swipe at like - the Washington post.

At some point in nearly every country people had slaves and slaveholders. This is not some special southern thing. Get over yourself and your biases.

I don’t think this story is real. Unless they’ve been dating a long time why would you as parents get invited to your daughter’s boyfriend’s sister’s wedding?

Can you post a source that "nearly every country" practiced American chattel slavery, which was known for its unusually brutal sexual abuse of women and children? Men would repeatedly rape women for the purpose of impregnating them to "breed" enslaved children. A chattel slavery survivor named Harriet Jacobs wrote in her memoir about being raped at the age of 12 by the 'master' of the house while his friend simultaneously raped her mother. Your downplaying of sexual violence against American women and children is frankly vile.

Agree. It's vile. PP does have a point. Slavery like you described is documented in many countries throughout history. You might benefit from a world history class.

You really believe this was standard practice?

A slave was a luxury good. Would you buy a sports car and treat it like crap? Some people will - yes, but most people will not.
