What’s so great about tankless water heaters?

Researched moving from gas to electric wh last year and got at least four contractors from the rockville area come in for estimates. All but one refused to even consider tankless. The only one who said they can do it was requesting tankless gas, not electric. Quote was 8K or 9K. It also requires yearly maintenance because of the heating elements and the hard water in MoCo. Eventually picked hybrid electric. One year later the AO Smith is showing ECC error (compressor). Had to switch electric panel too. In retrospect, I wished I got fully electric 60 or 80 g instead of hybrid. The benefit of having electric was for me was removing exhaust piping from the wh which allowed me to do some nice home remodel.
