Jobs in Art History Degree

So, what you are saying is that an art history degree by itself doesn't have a good ROI.

We never emailed the dean or anyone at the school because she was getting good grades and everything was going well. What jobs can someone with an Art History BS get?

Totally depends on the school

Yale Art History could probably get a job at Subway

Or at Sotheby's

Completely depends on the connections.

The one Yale and one Princeton art history majors we hired at our firm, a hedge fund in NYC, make 320k plus bonus straight out of undergrad.

So I disagree with your statement.

dp.. ok, but how many art history majors from Yale and Princeton work in hedge fund in NYC making $320K?

Law school
Teaching credential
Master of Library Science--also could work at Getty Institute with this
Apply at Getty Institute in LA or other museums, entry level
Galleries, auction houses

Take second job for a while if AH related jobs don't pay well--way leads onto way, make connections for further jobs, niches

My mom had a friend who had an art history master's. She was an art collector's private curator, and it was a full-time job that supported her.

It is a degree that shows she is an intellectual. And she will likely marry a high income man assuming you have a decent dowry.

basically, it's a finishing school degree, like home ec.

OP, your kid should be able to figure this out at their job fair or career office. Did she not do any internships?

PSA: parents, please talk to your kids BEFORE they go to college about job opportunities and career fairs.

Whatever job the person gets in the arts field, it will pay near to minimum wage. I hope OP has the funds to continue financially supporting her kid well into her 20s.

Is anyone going to bring up the fact that OP had no idea what her DD was majoring in until now, 3 months before graduation?

Of course, not many.
Yale history 4 year out = $77,988

Art history would be lower.
Art history at a lower tier schools would be even lower.
The lucky ones got those jobs via rich dads and fancy connections.

I'm so surprised nobody thought this was a troll post. I did. Shocked with all the genuine advice and lack of flaming.

OP - as with any new grad, she needs to figure out what she wants to do and apply to jobs. If she wants a job in art - then look to museums. But if she just wants a general job, I don't see how she's in any worse shape than an english or history major. I'd assume all three degrees require writing and analytics skills that could be applied in the workplace.

Divorce rate is 50%
very risky plan.

Won't a Masters in Art History have the same prospects?

Almost certainly. I have a relative with a PhD in art history from a T10 school who works as a HS teacher.

Art history majors getting consulting jobs are either top students from target colleges where companies recruit or have solid family connections.

Well, if there is some dowry money, kid can use it for MA, MBA or JD or just to subsidize living expenses while she does entry level jobs to reach to a better paying job.

However, a non-profit job and a for-profit spouse is indeed a mutually beneficial set up for whole family.

An art history degree from a ho hum college won't do much for dating or recruiting but one from a top school would have more weight for both.
