My kid chose Cornell over UMD Honors (with lots of merit). I would have gone UMD. UMD is rated very well for CS. Yes it is below Cornell but not enough to matter.

I am not sure I would choose Cornell over UMD honors these days and I went to Cornell.

You got Cornell money?

Cornel; is 10th and UMD is 11th on csrankings.org so not worth the additional $200K+ in costs IMO

Seriously, few to no hiring managers in CS will care if you attend UMD or Cornell for CS.

It's a definite maybe.

Any notable achievements besides schoolwork?

There are more students with MCPS with those core stats than seats in Honors, when you consider that UMD tries to balance the class across the whole state.

OOS HS 23. 3.98/4.5, 9 APs, 1560, NMSF direct admit to CS was offerred Honors College. Went through program year one. Great way to meet folks. Quit year 2 to focus on major specific activities.

OOS DD - interested in MD Honors. Strong stats (see below) - at this point we’re trying to get a sense of what kind of ECs and characteristics get OOS admit for Honors.

Stats - 1510, 3.99 UW, 12 AP (Calc BC, Bio, Physics C). Strong public school. Likely Humanities/social science major.

Lots of ECs, all consistent 9-12:
3 varsity sports (captain x 3) and 1 travel team, orchestra, trained peer mental health counselor, volunteer teacher/mentor at both HS and church, DECA (officer 11+12), county youth senate.

All consistent and authentic but nothing “exceptional” like national competitions or awards. Thoughts re Maryland Honors?

No idea but my OOS daughter has identical stats and rigor and is also hoping for honors. Good luck!

My kid was admitted to Honors at UMD two years ago. DC said it's not really that big of a deal. The best part was that they got a nicer dorm room. They dropped the honors program after year 1 to focus on their dual STEM major.

FWIW, DC's stats were 4.0 uwgpa, 4.92 wgpa from an MCPS magnet, 1580 SAT, loads of AP, all 5s except 1 (had 58 credits going in). Got merit.

Don't want to say as the details can be too identifying, but they got $20K total. Going through the 4+1 CS masters program. Will graduate in 4 years with 2 bachelors and 1 masters, all for under $150K. Not too shabby.
