Our 5GG team got destroyed this year b/c our 2 best players had conflicts for between half and 3/4 of the games.

Rec games are on Saturdays or Sundays. If your kid has conflicts for most Saturdays or Sundays, its unfair to the other players and coach to sign your kid up to play.

Please, we are talking about rec basketball. Most kids have all kinds of priorities weekends that create conflicts. Most kids are happy just having the opportunity to play with their friends and if some of their friends don't make all the games...well, welcome to life when you have to balance priorities.

Sorry, disagree. Rec sports are important to the kids and coaches who play them. Princess Larla dropping in twice all season for fun is obnoxious.

We are talking rec basketball, not CYO, not travel and not AAU. REC. it is about fun and playing with your buddies. Your coaches comment is hilarious in how naive it is. Most rec coaches are fine with travel kids practice participation becaue they know they don't have to explain what 5 out is or what a diamond and 1 press or any number of things a tec coach has to repeatedly tell/coach rec only kids.

Are you upset said travel players take your kids playing time but isnt at practice.. Sorry that's what rec is about. Playing with your friends. If you don't like it, coach your own team and don't let travel players on it. Good luck with that.

Why would someone who plays a travel team also join a rec team? Doesn’t make sense. Pick one.

Because they want to play multiple sports. travel soccer or baseball players who want to play basketball will play rec basketball, and because those kids are often in shape athletic kids they will often be amongst the better rec players.

But then when the sports conflict occasionally through the season they will prioritize their travel sport leaving the rec basketball team without a good player.

Kind of pathetic and not fair to rec kids who play for fun. They see themselves as athletic so they go to an occasional rec class to show off. I’ve never heard of people doing that. You are either on travel or rec, that’s it.

So they can play with their friends.

The friends can find a court and go play basketball games. Do they even know how to play basketball without adults hovering over them?

Oh but then they couldn’t win the rec league and brag about it! What fun would that be?

This happens in CYO too but only one or two parishes behave this way - ringer players playing on multiple teams and playing down, kids on teams who don’t go to that parish and aren’t even Catholic (don’t @ me, you have to belong to a parish to play CYO!), kids who just come in for big games who have never come to practice - which means the kids who show up every week don’t even get in the game - it’s gross and it comes from the top. The principals of the schools affiliated with these teams go to the games so they know that there is a 7th grader playing in a 5/6 playoff game, or a kid who doesn’t go to the school or parish on the team scoring every point. The parents know too. Embarrassing and really not “nurturing a competitive spirit.”

Any recommendation for recreational basketball team in spring/fall for montgomery county? My 3rd grader son wants to do more than winter basketball season only.
