Crime in NoMA, near where I work

Not sure about late night, but the person whose work is moving there should be ok. (I've worked in gallery place for 15 years and go out in DC too, and have never had an issue.) I don't drive in D.C. much but public transport has been fine.

Well there were 20 shots fired at N Cap and M around 10am this morning, hitting several cars, and then two people were shot outside the Streets Market near 1st and M NE just after 5pm, when lots of workers and residents were outside. That's not safe.

I’m the PP who wrote about my work moving there. I’m an early bird- start work at 630am and don’t really want to walk from Union Station to the new building at 6:15am…guess a change of duty hours is probably a smart idea.

My office is currently in Chinatown…half a block from the Walgreens that kept getting robbed by its inside job perps. I have commuted there by Metro for 16 years and I do feel it’s gotten unsavory. Many people in my office are also concerned about safety.

To the people saying it’s safe during the day — it’s not. Several of these violent crimes have occurred in the morning hours, and others between 4 and 6pm. So far noon seems ok? I’m kidding. It’s not ok.

Charles Allen led the city council to enact pro-crime measures in 2018.

He needs to be recalled:

DC will not be safe until we begin to rid the city counsel of people like Allen.

It breaks my heart about what Union station has become. I loved going through there to get to the trains, visit the market downstairs, even went to the movie theater there. I especially miss B. Smith’s restaurant. Walking around there used to make me happy.

Not sure if you are trying to insinuate that people are making up the neighborhood "NOMA" but there's a metro station called "NOMA/Galludet" so it's not really just a DCUM thing.

Until September I had been going to the Peace Corps building about once a month by metro and didn't feel unsafe... but some of the recent incidents would have given me pause.

I was being serious. What does NOMA mean? At first I thought it meant northern Massachusetts.

Sounds like it should be NOPA.

Holy Crap-- did you hear the shots? I haven't seen any reporting I didn't know about the shots fired yesterday morning. I was on my way to the Metro from work right after that shooting happened. I am at the intersection all that time-- as are so many people.

It is. It’s crazy. I started working in that area more than 10 years ago and yes, you had to be careful, but this is crazy. I used to take walks during work on the regular, in addition to visiting the numerous eateries. Now I drive into my garage and drive out to go home. And even that’s not safe anymore.

Not sure if this link will work but here is mpd asking for info on the car involved in yesterday morning's shooting https://groups.google.com/g/Official-MPD-1D/c/sMO_l0tMHo0/m/sQMFdSLDAgAJ

And here is a tweet with photos from the double shooting on the same block yesterday afternoon https://twitter.com/alanhenney/status/1760430258317091231?t=Yorxle3Ey9HUANe4BJS86w&s=19

21:10 agreed! I know people who've taken metro 3 times in 10 years who talk it being unsafe or unreliable. Meanwhile I take it 3-5x/week for the last 20+ years and find it perfectly fine.

Wrong. Union Station was renovated in 1988 and it became a shopping and dining destination. I went there for years and never felt unsafe. It’s only been with the rise of the homelessness and lawlessness in the past ten years that it has really declined.

+1

We use to lunch there when I worked nearby in the 00s, and I’ve met friends for dinner at the nice restaurants.

It’s a gorgeous building and sad how far it’s fallen.

+2 Much of DC became unsafe after the riots following MLK's murder in 1968. Then it got better during the early 2000's. Now it's on the decline again due to progressive policies such as extended school closures and being soft on crime. It's so sad to see what's happening to DC.

We finally had enough and moved after our once-safe neighborhood had a spike in crime that isn't going away plus couldn't deal with DC politics and the DCPS decline. It's night and day to be in a neighborhood where it's safe for our kids to bike and walk around. I lived in DC for over 20 years and never thought I'd leave until the insanity that started with the pandemic.

School closures were 4 years ago

How low information are you if you don’t know that the results of that disaster are still huge in the city?

+1 The schools fully reopened only 2.5 years ago. Now there's a whole generation of public school kids with trauma and learning loss. Plus the spike in crime that isn't subsiding.

JFC, read a book. You have no idea what happened in all major U.S. cities after 1968, you think Black folks just turned lawless in their own neighborhoods?

You need to read a history book if you think this didn't happen. You don't get to rewrite history to fit your agenda.
