Spinoff: "Mommy track" jobs?

Nonprofits are tough because they can be super stressful and overwork you. However, I have found that there are some where you can be in the type of role you're in and not have a lot of take-home work or stress. It really is about identifying the culture of the org. It also depends on your specific field and focus of your work.

Are you a lawyer or in IT?

What field are you in?

I work as a senior in house counsel and make $160k plus an annual bonus. I work roughly 8:30-4:00 And go into the office three days a week and work from home the other two. The office is 10 minutes from my house. The work isn’t stressful and I am honing and developing valuable, marketable skills, so I feel like I can scale up if I want to. I do feel like I’m underpaid but I love the low stress.

I’m in tech and my previous role was sort of directorial — responsible for getting stuff done as well as managing reports and clients. My new role is pure coding and I love it. I haven’t done serious overtime in years (either role) but do have a very flexible schedule (eg I’m often on late at night to finish stuff up but it’s because I ran errands during normal work hours or picked my kid up early from aftercare).

I think it helps to figure out which parts of your job are incompatible with parenting for you. In my case it was that managing clients was the same skillset as managing toddlers and I wanted to save that energy for home life.

This. I switched from managing 25 back to IC. I also strategically cut the number of required meetings down. My sanity is much improved.

IC?

Intelligence community.

As the spouse of one of these, very much disagree.

No, individual contributor (no people management)

Can someone answer- if I am clearly on "mommy track" based on my work history and the type of jobs I am applying to, why do I keep getting asked what my career goals are? I don't have grand aspirations to climb the ladder at this point.
