DP. Many of us grew up in VA, then moved elsewhere for work, and after many years, decided to move BACK to VA. Why? The number one reason is because of the quality of VA's universities. Of course there are opportunities outside of VA. Just as there are many opportunities within VA, that cost far less. And you do realize that people can *move* wherever they want after college, right?

Now you're claiming it takes "energy and vision" to simply go OOS?

+1 what a ridiculous comment by the PP. OP already said their kid isn't looking at the Harvard/Duke type of schools that are full of super smart and driven students. Even a choice like WashU with lots of good academic options could be interesting to explore over the in-state schools without having to be type A all the time. |
No offense but I wouldn’t move 5 miles for VA’s universities. |
Wash U??? What a joke. If you can get in there you can into UVA in state. They’re both ranked 24th, UVA is half the price, and UVA is twice the fun. Why in the hell would anyone in VA choose Wash U over UVA? |
Because UVA doesn’t appeal to everyone |
I assume you're talking about the VA pp "wondering" why we think her kids are "coasting" at a VA school, when on one said anything remotely like that and a pp was was merely responding with their own personal experience. |
And that’s because you’re foolish. When we moved to the DMV decades ago it was one of the main reasons we chose the VA suburbs over the MD ones. It’s a smart college savings plan. Ended up sending 2 kids to UVA, one to W&M, and one to VCU. Do you really think we’d have been better off sending the kids to silly schools like Tulane and Wake Forest? Really? |
Because not everyone can get in. |
To some of us, UMD and UVA are equivalent. Not trying to upset anyone but I couldn’t care less between the two. |
Sure. But outside of UMD there’s nothing else in Maryland. And going to UMD means not even leaving the DMV. They even have a metro stop. So VA is still more appealing. |
Not to everyone. Some of us find VA too southern. Some of us don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere. Some of us want local internships. |
So you pick GMU. Problem solved. See what I mean about Virginia having more options? |
it can be both |
Stop trolling. We don’t need another thread of this. Everyone has different interests, priorities, and budgets. Get over it. |
