DP, but yes, working parents are going to need child care. And that's most parents these days.

So you pay for it on the fifth day. Done.

Elementary- no subject should be more than 45 mins in my opinion. Kids can’t focus for that long. Recess should be 45 mins to 1 hour. Currently kids start coming in at 9:05 and start leaving at 4:05. That is 7 hours at school.

Sample Schedule Elementary
1 hour for specials
30 min lunch
45 min recess
45 min for Math
30 mins Writing
30 mins Reading
15 mins Word Study
30 mins SS
30 mins Science
30 mins- intervention and Enrichment.

That would be 5.75 hours which is much better for kids.

Secondary- Get rid of block scheduling except for certain classes such as Science that has labs.

This would be so much better. The day could even be 6 hours because the 15 minutes could be counted in as arrival time. It takes 15 minutes to get kids in the doors as it is.

I'd be ok with getting rid of the daily Morning Meetings. Perhaps after a certain point in the year we could do them 2 or 3 days a week. Doing a Morning Meeting every day for 180 days gets to be a bit much.

In early elementary they could probably keep it though. The kids need to share and communicate a lot and they also need the routine/structure.

People will leave Fairfax for other local locations that offer 5 day a week education. Why pay for an expensive house here when we can move next door to Loudon and have our kids in school 5 days a week.

I think a shorter school day would be more beneficial than a 4 day week. Kid’s benefit from the routine of a 5 day school day.. Why not get school out 30 minutes earlier and drop some of the meetings and/or yoga with the counselor.

I teach upper ES. Home Sick. I used to really struggle with morning meeting, but totally had to revamp during Covid. Now I love it! It is a great way to sneak in academics, do team building activities and build background knowledge. It took Covid for me to really analyze how and what I was doing during that time.

I can tell you aren’t a teacher. 30 minutes isn’t enough time to do a meaningful lesson with elementary kids, especially kindergartners!

I’d like to hear more about how a 4 day workweek has helped with student success. The rest of the world has a 5 day school week. Why should we be a guinea pig. No thanks.

All for morning meetings run well- that link to other studies/activities working on, but please just skip when asking 5th graders every week to “say good morning and name an animal that starts with first letter of your name”

and what do you think large classrooms or long term subs are doing to student success. Lol. You still don’t get it.

Big areas in TX have already voted and decided this is how it will go next year. It was thanks to teacher shortages there.

I am a teacher and 5 year olds do not have the ability to pay attention for longer than 10 mins. A 60 min block is too long.
