Elementary- no subject should be more than 45 mins in my opinion. Kids can’t focus for that long. Recess should be 45 mins to 1 hour. Currently kids start coming in at 9:05 and start leaving at 4:05. That is 7 hours at school.
Sample Schedule Elementary
1 hour for specials
30 min lunch
45 min recess
45 min for Math
30 mins Writing
30 mins Reading
15 mins Word Study
30 mins SS
30 mins Science
30 mins- intervention and Enrichment.
That would be 5.75 hours which is much better for kids.
Secondary- Get rid of block scheduling except for certain classes such as Science that has labs.
This would be so much better. The day could even be 6 hours because the 15 minutes could be counted in as arrival time. It takes 15 minutes to get kids in the doors as it is.
I'd be ok with getting rid of the daily Morning Meetings. Perhaps after a certain point in the year we could do them 2 or 3 days a week. Doing a Morning Meeting every day for 180 days gets to be a bit much.
In early elementary they could probably keep it though. The kids need to share and communicate a lot and they also need the routine/structure.
PP here. I’m in elementary.
I teach upper ES. Home Sick. I used to really struggle with morning meeting, but totally had to revamp during Covid. Now I love it! It is a great way to sneak in academics, do team building activities and build background knowledge. It took Covid for me to really analyze how and what I was doing during that time.
